These are beautiful birds aren't they? I like your choice on DOF. Sets the bird of nicely.

New to this forum and just saw your image. Impressed with the level of detail you provided in capturing this image. Really like the composition especially because the heron is doing something. If anything, I would say that while the bird is very sharp, it is a little flat and you would expect this with the lighting situation. You might take it back to post and work on lighting and texture within the bird. Perhaps the wings and a little with the head and eye. Not necessary but you asked for feedback.

Good shot. I am sure that couldn't remember all that planning even if I had done it myself.
To my old eyes it seems that the focus point is on the front wing and not on the all important eye. Maybe fewer active focus points and bunched to the left would have worked better.
Still excellent though, never been much good at panning myself.

Larry,
Your image is "GREAT". Spent 3 months shooting birds in the "Everglades" this past winter. Your set up and patience shows a rewarding picture. Photographing birds in flight is quiet difficult.
My wife and I both commend you on a job well done. Keep up the good work.

Regards,
Len A ;-)

Getting the shot.
My passion is shooting wildlife and as such much thought goes into taking a shot. I set the camera up for possible shots before I even start walking away from my vehicle--just in case some opportunity should appear.

Great picture! Proper preparation prevents poor pictures.

I'm a bit confused.
You wrote "I did not want to shoot at the extreme focal length of the lens (400mm) because by shooting at 300-320 mm I would get a greater blur on the background which was the major concern."
I thought that the background blur of an image shot at 400mm is greater than one shot at 300mm (because the depth of field is less at 400mm than at 300mm) for a given aperture and distance.
Does this image show the full frame? If it does, then shooting at 400mm from where you were standing may have given you too tight of a shot.
BTW- ASBSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL IMAGE!

Lovely...if you tried to blow up more however, I think you would lose sharpness. I know how hard those darn birds are..especially in flight...

Maybe one day move up to that 500 or 600...you can check out a friend of mine on Flickr...Alex Viduetsky...he has been doing birds almost exclusively for quite a few years...

Hard to do those wild birds..but I still think it is a lovely shot...maybe crop a little tighter..put more focus on the bird..Just a slightly competent amateur's opinon.

I have to say that in my case it was part luck.

I had watched the heron fly into an open area, so I thought I'd shoot it there. But it started to fly away; all I could do was to get it NOW with my approximate panning and with whatever setting my camera was set to. With luck . . . I got an interesting shot.
