right now i am using a d 3000 and want to upgrade.

i would like more megapixels but i am not interested in one with a movie camera built in. i would rather have one with out that.

16 mega pixels maybe... i looked at the 5100 but it has a movie camera
any suggestions?

my next question will be can i use the lens on my d-3000 interchange?

The d7000 is a lot of bang for the buck. I don't use the HD video feature but it is there if I want to. You can use your lens and the Older AF lens also it has a motor built in the body. I also have two D300 bodies and a D80. I think we are stuck with the video if we want it or not.

i was afraid of that. i am not interested in movies i guess they have to add those features for everyone else or maybe it helps justify the price.

No it's a c sensor the 700 is full frame. The nice feature with the d7000 is the video does auto focus which makes it more interesting than the D90 that you had to manual focus. I get awesome photos with this camera. It's about 1100 bucks.

As I noted in another post, I just returned from the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas where I spoke with a rep at the Nikon booth. I asked about updating, and mentioned that the video capabilities really turned me off. His answer was, and I quote, "turn the page." In other words, we're stuck with video whether we want it or not. I'll be upgrading from a D80 and his suggestion to me was the D7000.

Norman: I just came back from the 2012 CES/PMA show in Las Vegas. There were many new things introduced in photography to say the least. Don't worry about the movie option within the new cameras; as I said ( it's an option ). You do not need to us it if you wish; However when the time comes you will like that option. The trend within todays cameras is continuing to move to being able to capture both. Just look at Nikons new D4 ( a major step forward ) for an example. The lenses you already have will work on many future cameras for many years to come. There is some talk about a mirrorless version in the pro line-up but I don't see that happening for several years. You probably don't need a Pro rig but stepping up the Mega Pixle count should give you your desired results.

thanks for the info alphaomega2 yes you are correct it may come in handy at some point. It looks like i will be going with the d-7000 from all i am seeing and reading. I would like to go full frame but that for me is way out of budget right now. but i think this with 16 mp will be doing me a great job for a long time to come.

Nice choice. You'll still be shooting DX format and should experiance no suprises. BTW When Nikon came out with the D7000 that was considered by many of us to be the former D300's upgrade.

I did not buy my D7000 for movie making. But...

On two occasions this year I flipped the lever and pushed the button. I have captured forever the motions of a severe rain storm and a flock of sheep blocking the road to the North Rim.

You never know what you would like to see in motion.

Norman, I bet your car might also reach 130 MPH, did you choose not to buy it because you never intend to drive that fast? Just because it can and you are not interested in it does not mean you should simply forget a particular product to buy, no matter what it is. Would you also not consider buying a camera because it had water seals that were good down to say 15ft and you don't like water and never go swimming or take your camera close to any bodies of water?

Just forget what you feel you will never use and do as the rep said, turn the page. As was mentioned, you never know when you might just need that. You never know when you might be in a lonely outdoor spot and a UFO lands by you, better to have the movie mode than think about wishing you had it right then and there, because at times like that a still image might not be good enough proof.

By the way, you could save some money and buy the D5100 body, it has the same guts as my D7000, just not as many bells and switches on the body, but is much cheaper. either one, you will have a great camera compared to your D3000. Even the 3100 is not bad, but the 5100 and of course the 7000 are better. Just do it!

i went and looked at a comparison between the two and you are correct they are close not alot of difference between them.

I was originally looking at the 5100 but majority of the folks were saying go the 7000 route.
