Ok.

The original is of low quality and has many artifacts already. (ISO 1600).
I first corrected the overall image balance, bringing back your wife's shirt to an acceptable grey-off-white. (ACDSee 5.x)
Then I imported your avatar as a layer. (PE 3.x)
Created a mask of the faces, hair and hands.
Used the avatar to adjust your hair color vs your skin! Why? there are less variations there.
Saved as JPG to show you the setup
Removed the avatar layer, saved.

If you follow these steps and use you own skin as sample you will able to do a much better job than I did. :-D

Note the only washout is the skylight, as before.

A PP expert can do a much better job than I. I just got tired of seeing color shifts all over the place. That does not mean my 'skin solution' is best. This is only a different approach to the problem.

A Nikon D3000 is capable of producing a much larger original so why the small format?

The small format was accidental. It's now set for large.
I've learned a lot since then.
Thanks much for working on it .
The shirt is perfect.
Quite an impprovement overall.
I gave her that camera for Christmas
and most settings were from the factory.
I've completely went through the settings on my 5000.
Doing much better on photo's without flash.
