Hmmm.... That 16-300 would replace 3 of my lenses, with a bit wider on the low end to boot. Wonder when, and what cost. I guess my question would be how the quality (sharpness, CA, and the like) would compair with my current kit lenses? Too many questions, I guess, but to replace 3 lenses with just one, plus IS, sounds really attractive.

I just received an email from Tamron on this lens, you could go to the Tamron website, I am sure they had the price, but I do not remember the cost.

Looks good, and more good images, think I'll go for the 16-300-----whenever it becomes available... Have appreciated all the comments.

have had this lens for about 1 1/2 years now and love it on my 60D. I find that at 250mm it is actually a little sharper than my 70-200 Canon.

If you're looking at the older Sig 18-250 lens forget it. I have one on my Nikon D5100; - NOT a very sharp or consistent lens. I believe the newer version (with macro) is a bit better. However, bear in mind that just about ANY lens with that amount of zoom (including Tamron's 18-270 lenses) are going to be a compromise, - especially in that sort of price band. I know it saves changing lenses, but sooner or later you would likely become a bit disappointed with image quality - as indeed, I have become. I've found the Nikon 18-105 and the 70-300 a better option on my D5100, . . along with my Nikon AFS G ED 50mm f1.8 prime and my Sigma 10-20mm.

More shots with the TAMRON 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II with Piezo Drive used on a Canon T-3, entry level small crop sensor camera.

Never leaves my D7000 and is the best bang for the buck I've invested in since going digital. Many folks on here use this lens and I feel it is extremely under rated by the so called experts. Talk to people who have used the lens out in the field vs someone in a lab. It is not especially good in low light gyms and you'll pull your hair out trying to get decent shots but you would get the same results with Sigma, Canon,or Nikon. Have used it indoors with good lighting and had good results on the D7000.......

And the way things are going, it will probably be Sigma.

I'm the original poster on this thread, and just ordered the Tameron 16-300 lens, (which must have just become available), so we'll see how it is.... I should get it Friday, so may be able to do some star testing as well as maybe some bird shots. I'll post what I get....

Amazon now has them for $629. Haven't found any reviews on them yet but for my use I'm going for the Sigma 18-250 Macro.

Hi, I'm looking to buy the Nikon D7100. Do you like yours? I have an old Nikon D80 with a Tamron 28mm-300mm lens. I have the Nikon 18mm-55mm that came w/ the camera and a Nikon 55mm-200mm. The 28-300 pretty much stays on my camera. I was going to go for the D7100 body only and use these lens for now. Any suggestions?
Can I use the same battery, etc. in the D7100? I talked to girl at Best Buy and she said that everything was compatible, but my husband talked to someone at a camera shop and was told that the same battery will not work. If I need a different battery which one is best for longer use?
Any advice that you can give would be appreciated.
Thanks, Chris

I have written previously that I took this lens on my Canon 60D as the only one on a 30 day Asia touring trip last Fall in order to travel light. The results while on the go were quite satisfactory.

Now I am preparing for a summer trip to Europe where I will be able to carry more gear so I decided to do lens sharpness testing to decide what to take with me. I also plan to give my Canon 40D to a grandson who will be taking a photography course in school for which he needs a DSLR and this test will affect which lenses I provide to him. Now to the results.

Tripod, f/8 aperture preferred, IS/OS off, and comparing the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 OS Macro to the Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS at 18mm, 28mm, and 50mm, and the Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS at 28mm, 50mm, 80mm, 105mm, and 135mm. I did not test it against my Canon 70-200mm f/4L as in previous tests there was no comparison. Big advantage for the L.(No surprise there.)

Conclusions? The Canon 18-55mm was clearly sharper than the Sigma 18-250mm especially at 50mm, but at 18mm it was mixed (center better for 18-55, edges for 18-250) and at 28mm it was close. The Canon 28-135mm, however, was clearly sharper at all focal lengths examined. I throw in for free that the Canon 18-55mm was slightly sharper than the Canon 28-135mm at 28mm and close but not as sharp as the 28-135mm at 50mm.

So while the reasonably priced, relatively light and compact Sigma 18-250mm is a walkaround lens that "does it all", it does not do it as well as other comparably priced lenses that cover less range. And nowhere as well as the much higher priced Canon 70-200 f/4L IS.

So which lens(es) will go to Europe with me? Probably the 70-200mm with a 1.4x TC for set pieces and the 28-135mm for walkaround, along with a Canon S100 24-105mm (full frame basis) f/2 compact in my pocket for wider shots and for when I do not want to carry/expose my Canon 60D with heavier lenses. Anybody suggest otherwise?

I use the Sigma 18-250 3.5-6.3 Macro HSM as a walk around lens on my Nikon D90 and love it .. It replaces two other kit lens that my wife has taken over. I have a Kenko 1.4 telextender that I carry also and it works well with the Sigma. Pictures are sharp enough for me but I don't print anything bigger than 8 x 10 (my printer limits) and I am quite happy with the lens.

Since the post above was written I had an occasion to replace some camera equipment and bought the Tamron 18-270 to go on my wife's D50. The Sigma and a Kenko 1.4 T.E. on my D90 and the Tamron on the D50 are all the lens we carry for an all day shoot. They both work very well for what we use them for and we really don't care if one is sharper than a $1,000 Nikon or not. We just shoot for our selves and family and enjoy these cameras to the fullest. Hope you really enjoy your new purchase and we are ready to see some pictures as soon as you can. Good luck with your new purchase.
