I sent my 70-200 Sigma off to to their repair facility yesterday. I didn't realize how expensive UPS had gotten. The man quoted me the price of $35. Wow. I would imagine that Nikon has spent a good chunk of money to UPS pertaining to the D600 issue.

Did we discuss this a week or two ago?
I had the same problem with my Sigma 150-500. It was a sensor that they replaced, and updated the firmware at the same time. Fortunately, my wife wanted to go shopping out on L.I. so I stopped off on the way and waited 20-25 minutes for it.

I live in a small town, too. We have to have a PO Box at the PO...no mail delivery.
I ship a lot of stuff I sell on eBay via USPS. Flat rate box...good packing...insurance. Usually less than UPS or FedEx.

You can just go to www.UPS.com and print your own labels, then drop off the package at a UPS store, or any brown truck. I would think a lens would cost no more than $15 to ship anywhere in CONUS.

It's the insurance that adds a lot to the price. From what I can recall, it cost about $6.00 for postage and $30 for insurance to send my D600 to Nikon. Figures not exact.

Well, the shipping itself was about half of the cost. The rest was insurance. It was around $18 for $1000 of insurance. That seemed outrageous.

I found what I paid for shipping. I sent a D600 to Nikon, insured, for $36.96. When I sent the second one, I didn't insure it. That cost just $6.16 - both Priority Mail. Both arrived at Nikon the following day.

Jerry, you live close enough that you could have tossed it over the fence to them.

I sent my Sigma lens back for repair a couple of years ago. I went overboard to package it securely, about a week later I got it back. In a large box with about 25 Styrofoam peanuts bent filter ring & never worked since. I will never buy another Sigma product ever.!!!! I hope you have better luck.

Just receiving it packed with styrofoam peanuts would p**s me off.

Pete :D

I built a wooden box to send in a few saw blades for sharpening.
UPS charged me double ($40) for using the wooden crate instead of a cardboard box! I can't figure out their reasoning yet?

A few years ago I had to send my six year old Sigma 24-70 F2.8 Macro in for repair because the barrel had cracked. This lens also had a very slight front focus problem, but I forgot to mention that when I sent the lens in. When I got it back it looked brand new and the front focus problem had also been fixed. I forget the repair cost, but I remember it was very reasonable.

[quote=wsa111]Don't go to the UPS franchise outlets. They tack on an extra 15-25% & that's there commission.
use UPS depots & same for Fedex.
USPS is a deal on there flat rate boxes.[/quote
I used one of their flat rate boxes and it was a joke. It was supposed to be $4.99 if it fits, it did (it was just a lens that I was returning, Freight cost ended up being $ 69.00 to NYC!
