I think it's all he needs for pictures of his kids. Other than that, I have no idea.

He says he can't tell any difference between the jpeg settings.

Look at the price. The most expensive should have thew most capabilities.

I'm selling my D5100 for $2200.00, for example.

For the most part, I agree with that about quality (basic, normal, fine), but using small instead of large is odd.

The easiest way to see all Nikon's cameras and options is to visit their site @ www.nikonusa.com

They are starting to get more logical:
* D3x00 (D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300)
* D5x00 (D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300)
* D7x00 (D7000, D7100)
* ?D9x00 (D9300?)
* D6x0 (D600, D610)
* D8x0 (D800, D800e, D800s?)
* Dx (D3, D3s, D3x, D4, D4s)

The 4-digit cameras are DX, the 3-digit cameras are FX, the 1-digit cameras are top-of-the-line pro bodies.

The D100, D200, & D300 were all DX bodies

I guess the D90 is just the odd man out?

Well, not really. D90 and D300s are the last of first generation of dslr from Nikon. The numbers were D100, D200, D300 for semi pro cameras, and D40, D50, D70, D80 and D90 for the consumer bodies. D1, D2, D3 were the pro bodies and Nikon is still using that numbering system for the pro line of cameras.

Being new to digital SLR photography, I find it confusing that the different models of Nikon may not be numbered in a meaningful order. Can anyone tell me the sequence order of Nikon SLR models from least capable to most capable?

Camera naming is not a strong point in this industry.

With Nikon, the fewer the digits, the better the camera, and the higher the price. A lower number with the same number of digits is lower in features, so a D3000 is below a D5000. A D600 is below a D800. Then you get to the big bucks, the D3 - top of the heap.

One thing to keep in mind, the D7000 series is the first numerical series in the current line with a focusing motor in the body, something that is important to some people, especially if they have lenses without motors.
