Being new to digital SLR photography, I find it confusing that the different models of Nikon may not be numbered in a meaningful order. Can anyone tell me the sequence order of Nikon SLR models from least capable to most capable?

Look at the price. The most expensive should have thew most capabilities.

D3200, D5200, D7100, D610, D800, D800E, D4, D4s & the D/f will be in there somewhere between D610 & D4s.

They are starting to get more logical:
* D3x00 (D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300)
* D5x00 (D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300)
* D7x00 (D7000, D7100)
* ?D9x00 (D9300?)
* D6x0 (D600, D610)
* D8x0 (D800, D800e, D800s?)
* Dx (D3, D3s, D3x, D4, D4s)

The 4-digit cameras are DX, the 3-digit cameras are FX, the 1-digit cameras are top-of-the-line pro bodies.

Thank you very much! Just what I wanted to know. There really is a logic process in the numbering.

Nice quick reference to the numbering system - thanks :thumbup:

I guess the D90 is just the odd man out?

Yes, I think so, especially with the current numbering system.

I know Nikon considers the D90 and D300s as current, and the D300s is until the D9300 comes out, but I think the D90 has been replaced by the D7x00.

Turn your browser to rockwell.com/ . Ken Rockwell has been the guru of Nikon cameras and lenses for many years. He reviews every camera and every lens, gives his honest opinion--even when Nikon won't like it--and makes accurate comparisons. He lays out his personal preferences and explains them. I have been using his advice for at least 10 years and three cameras as well as several lenses and have never been steered wrong. (I switched from Canon to Nikon about thirty years ago when I also dumped my 4x5 view and my Mamiyaflex.)

(He does have one peculiarity that baffles me. He prefers highest quality jpeg to RAW.)

It's worse than that, he prefers low quality jpegs ("I use SMALL JPG BASIC.", Rockwell D800 settings)!

Until I learned about RAW, I did too. Wonder why he likes small jpegs?

Didn't Nikon supersede the D90 with the D7000, giving up the D + two digit numbering system?

I think it's all he needs for pictures of his kids. Other than that, I have no idea.

Yes, I believe it went D80 --> D90 --> D7000 --> D7100.
