A bit more modern perhaps but war photographer James Nachtwey is a master of his craft. To me, his images convey the stark and sometimes bitter reality of our inhumanity.

For the kind of photography that I do, John Shaw is my first choice although I admire Ansel Adams for his contribution to the art!
:D
My favorite photographer changes almost on a daily basis. However, for about 3 months now I have been inspired by Ben Canales and Adam Jones the most.
Since I'm a portrait photographer for the most part, I'd have to go with Cecil Beaton.

I'll try to find a link to his bio, but you can google him to get a feel of just how terrific-a-photographer he was.
I'll have to go with the Photo Secession crowd of the late 19th and early 20th century; Steichen, Stieglitz, and the discovery of the likes of Monet, Picasso...and working to bring photography into the art world...Just finished a Bio of Steichen...Penelope Niven...great piece of writing, exceptional research.
Yes Richard Avedon Had some great Fashion images among other work.
From Tangoking, Paul
Mother Nature and the human condition inspire me.

I lean on Ansel Adams myself. Visited Yosemite and stayed in a cabin in the Park for a week. It was a dream come true of me !

Thanks for posting this thread...I've been checking out some of these photographers that I'm not familiar with and found some new favorites of my own!
I had never seen the work of Lars Van De Goor or David Muench and I'm a fan!

My favorite is Ansel Adams
My favorite is Thomas D Mangelsen - check out mangelsen.com
He didn't start out as a photographer, he was a biology major, and studied zoology and wildlife biology. In his study of animal behavior he had to observe them, and naturally, he began taking pictures of them. And, yes, it was his job to observe so he did have all the time needed to be in the right place at the right time to take the right shots. But, as well, he knew enough about the animals to know the right place and the right time of the year to catch them in fantastic shots. Take a look and you'll see why I list him as my favorite.
