after a few years, my printer finally died I need a printer that makes good photos and can handle simple reports. I am thinking either a Epson or canon. Just steer me in the right direction. Nothing really fancy, but can get the job done no more than $200 or hopefully a lot less.

I would give you my Epson Stylus Photo 2400 with assorted 13x19 boxes of paper and set of new cartridges. I have it on auction sited by people moving me into assisted living. Bidding ends Friday night. I have not used it in a year.

Just pay shipping and handling. I can take it to UPS store to get estimate.

The PixmaPro 100 uses dye based ink. The Pixma 10& pixma Pro 1 use pigment inks.

Mine claimed pigment ink. It's a Pro 100 Of course, I have no idea what's in those cartridges.

I just looked them up to double check and the 100 is dye based, the other two are pigment inks. The Pro 100 uses the CLI42 series of inks.

I had read a "road test" report on it before buying it. And I thought they had mentioned a different kind of ink, which of course was more expensive. I to am 78, so you can't rely on my memory.

IN PART: I think I will have to consider my ink costs and maybe go that route myself...

There was a reference in the printer forum stating that Dye vs Pigment and resistance to UV is not a factor any more. Sove dyes are very light stable.

Perhaps the best stability would be Lead for black, Chromium for yellow and red, sure their toxic, but those old master's painting lasted a long time. (Just kidding)

Yes, the cost of UV additives for making inks is low ... yes I was impressed by the data.

The only problem I have had in the 4 years on the Epson 305 was pluggage when letting sleep a month. Eventually I found out that using a shallow plastic lid and putting rubbing alcohol just to wet the tip of the cart was sufficient. The alcohol would visually wick up into the cart. Then I would tap on counter top supported tissue. The inertia would drive the clot out and then back to business.

Seriously, it is an odd feeling not to be concerned about "expensive" ink once you install a CIS and realize it has been almost a year since you bought ink. It will be a while before I put my Canon is service. I just got the Epson 825 in service. Prints great.... but gosh all the color is in a cluster and you would have to buy all just for one. Those carts do not contain much either. Best of luck on giving CIS a try.

davidcaley sorry for your need to move, but you will make the best of it. I suggest you make several great slide shows and then use the TV to show your photos. Perhaps 100 each. if that is not possible, then a 17" laptop shows great. There will be people there who love photography. This is exactly what I suggested to one of my lady friends. Our best to you.

Thanks so much for your kind suggestion. Digital photography will be my main activity. Slide shows is great idea. Slide shows are but of jokes in modern society but you are correct my generation loved them and still do. I am encouraged by your idea. David

Just tried to buy ink for my Pro 100 at Staples. (no we ain't got that) And 2 Best Buy's......had to buy it from Canon on line. $134.00 inc. Mass tax and shipping for a "valuepac" of all eight inks. Not too bad when you consider this is the first time I had to buy ink, and I've had the printer since last July. Canon included some paper, and a 12x12 Wedding folder. What do I need that for?
Strangely enough, all 8 inks were completely out at the same time. And I was getting a message that my light gray was the only one out. My old Pixma 960 would keep printing after one or two cartridges ran out. Not the Pro 100. It stops for it's own good. Won't print till you get the new ink.

I may have ruined the Pixma 960 by trying to print while low on ink. I also bought ink from Cartridge World or whatever it's called, and that may have helped to break my 960. I suggest you use only original ink, and not the generic brand.
Happy Printing!

If you are not a high volume printer, Amazon with two day shipping for each cartridge as you need it is easy.

Just checked the pro 100 ink on Red River Paper. CLI42 multi pack is $118.99 . I buy a multipak and then change the cartridges as they go empty.

I am using the Canon Pro 100 and it prints really fine photos. But beyond that it does a really good job with monochrome prints and it is why I upgraded from the PRO9000 Mk II. I found a brand new sealed package for $90 on Craigslist. It is heavy (44 lbs) and takes a lot of room. Knowing the expense of ink,I only use it to print larger size color prints - I use a much cheaper $50 Canon to print text and snap shot photos.
