From my experience with Nikon repair I would spend the extra and get a new camera.

Nikon does not roll back shutter count on refurbs/shutter replacements, etc.

They must have on mine as it really showed zero (before the shot I took to check it)! It was the first thing I checked when I got it.

Both of my Nikon refurbished cameras came to me with 0 shutter count. I've had excellent luck with refurbished items (flash, lenses,IPods and of course cameras. All bought from Cameta.

B & H also has a brand new D800 for $2796.00 It comes with the following: Ruggard Commando 36 DSLR Shoulder Bag ▪ SanDisk 32GB SDHC Extreme Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card ▪ Watson EN-EL15 Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (7.0V, 1800mAh) ▪ Oben ACM-2400 4-Section Aluminum Monopod

I don't know, $2400 vs $2800? For brand new and about 3-4 hundred dollars in extra's, seems like the new is the way to go and you know the shutter count! ZERO

I'd hope it isn't zero: that would mean they didn't test it.

I consider Refurbs as better than new. Early failures are in the nature of such equipment. The Refurb has been run enough to get past the early failures and individually checked by a Nikon tech. That degree of checking doesn't happen on new ones off the assembly line.

My D800 is my third Nikon Refurb. I am very happy with all of them. They all came in new condition and worked flawlessly. I still have two of them and sold one (a D7000) while it was still in perfect working order.

I suggest getting the one-year extended warranty with it if you can do so for a very low price. It is free on Nikon Refurbs from Cameta and only about $8 from Adorama. I'd bet B&H has a similar deal on Nikon Refurbs but haven't looked for it. Refurbs come with only a 90-day warranty. I haven't had to use it on any of my Nikons, though.

I bought my D600 and D300 refurbished. Absolutely no issues. Solid performers.

I might buy at D7100 refurbished, maybe. However, I don't think I would buy a D800 refurbished, especially with only $400.00 difference. I suspect that a D800 might have had more use than a D7100 but that's only a guess and not based on any information or fact. Good luck.
My D7100 is refurbished and so far is a stellar performer. Bought the D800 new, but only because I couldn't find a refurb at the time. Also had a refurb D70s.

I've been buying refurb camera and electronic gear for many years. My take is that factory refurbs have been through the process twice and should be right. Another point is that all refurbs aren't defective returns. Many were simply returns for other reasons having nothing to do with performance.

I'd have absolutely no reluctance to buy a factory refurb D800 from a reputable dealer; B&H, Cameta, Adorama.

Go to shuttercount.com and upload a small pic and they will tell u the shutter count. The shutter count is in the Mother Board so even if they change the shutter mechanism it doesn't affect the count.

Ah, so that may be why my D800 came with zero. I still wished it had a few as evidence they tested it!

I bought a referb D800E. I soon discovered that the camera had focusing issues. The camera was an early model and I am sure that it was one that had focusing issues and Nikon just turned around and sold it as a referb without doing anything. I returned the camera and I bought a new camera that is fine.

I have purchased factory refurbs on many occasions without encountering any problems. In fact a Nikon refurb undergoes a very thorough benchtest before being resold. I've purchased other major quality brands with equally good result. In fact, an Epson projector has been doing well for me. My 18-200 VRII lens is a refurb.

Probably not for a mere $400 on a D800 but a bit larger spread would make it for me.

I have bought cameras & lenses from B&H that were refurbished. I have generally been very happy, though I did buy a D5200 that had over 25,000 actuations on it. It worked fine, but thought the count was high. Nikon does NOT reset the shutter count to zero. One other potential problem that I have not seen anyone else address is that B&H does not guarantee that the camera is a US model. It could be a gray market product. Once your 90 warranty is gone, you better hope nothing goes wrong with it. If you go this route I would definitely recommend that you get the extended warranty. Best advice though... if you are spending this much money, a few hundred extra for a new D800 seems like a no-brainer to me.
