And since the app is an obscene price how much are the plugins?

10,000 plugins for 99 GBP or 166.32 U.S. dollars.

Less than 2 cents each.

Your argument was that GIMP could out perform Photoshop with it's 1000 plugins. Now that you can see that there's far more plugins available for Photoshop, price is now the important issue. Which it obviously was all along. Why not just say so in the first place?

I started with Picasa and graduated to LR5. Both are non-destructive which is good, particularly when you are just starting out. Still use Picasa for quick and dirty edits, emailing pics and posting to my blog.

What is your point!!!!

Thought it was quite clear. Many feel they must defend PS (which is a good app) to justify the obscene price they paid for it. They feel they must bash another good free app -GIMP to justify it even though they haven't tried it.

Yep, that's true. If I needed a car and could get a free new Nissan or pay List price for a Volvo, I'd take the Nissan, It'll get me there just as well as the Volvo. Got lots of money left for gas. Or maybe a new lens.

If you didn't know why didn't you look it up?

http://www.v-direct.org.uk/photoshopplugins-pro.htm

Now you know.

And since you didn't disagree with my assertion that the real issue is cost, why would you even bother to mention numbers? Nothing wrong with being frugal, saving, thrifty, careful, prudent etc. Why are you trying to make the issue something else?

Photoshop Elements 12 (one time cost, under $100.00).

I agree! There is no point in going to Creative Cloud PSE 12 should meet her needs. If she becomes really serious about photography, consider adding the Lightroom. I suggest she starts shooting JPGs and uses PSE to start. There is no point in overwhelming her with a program that is too complicated. Too many options in a program can be a turn-off.

Thanks to everyone for your informative suggestions. My granddaughter has decided to to go with Picasa for now and then move up if the interest continues.
Enjoy the day.......

I'll be straight up. I have an extreme dislike for Picasa bordering on hate. It has one of the worst user interfaces I have ever encountered. It is not the least bit intuitive. And things that are simple in other photo editing programs are needlessly frustrating or impossible in Picasa. Having said that if she is able to master it more power to her and I will tip my hat. If it meets her needs that's great. I just hope it doesn't turn her off to photo editing.

Can you tell I don't like Picasa?:-)

BTW - Full disclosure. I do use Picasa WebAlbums to post my pictures online and share with friends and even that is usually an exercise in frustration.
