I don't see where a child praying before lunch in a public school is establishing a religion. It is unconstitutional to deny her freedom of religion or freedom from it.

In the 90s my daughter was told not to pray in school at lunch, she told us and I told her to tell them to come talk to me if she had any more problems. She didn't have any more problems.
Some people try to force their nonreligion on the children and some get away with it.

For people like you, for beginners.

The parents should call their local ACLU. The ACLU has on a number of occasions gone to bat - and even gone to court - to fight for the right of students to pray at school. Yes - you heard me right - for the RIGHT to PRAY at SCHOOL! An individual praying is an act of freedom of religion and freedom of speech, and unless a student is disrupting the educational process, a student has the right to exercise their religion as they see fit. No one has the right to tell them to stop unless, of course, it is time to return to class or they are disrupting a school activity. The ACLU does fight against employees/representatives of the government directing religious activities in schools - they consider that a violation of the rights of those not of the supported religion and a violation of the separation of church and state. In one case in Pennsylvania, for example, a student was told that she could not sing a religious song in a school talent show. The ACLU intervened on her behalf and the school backed down. The ACLU is not quite the demon people think they are - they defend everyone's rights. They lost a huge percentage of their supporters a few decades ago when they supported the effort of a neo-Nazi group to get a parade permit. Although disgusted by the message, they feel strongly that they have lost their soul if they start advocating rights for only specific groups of people.

Thanks for posting, I wish that the news coming out of the Philadelphia school system was that another child got caught praying as opposed to sucker punching a teacher.

[quote=SteveR]Parents get truth and encourage their daughter to pray anywhere, anytime.

Next time tell her to wear a hajab and face mecca when she prays. Then they'll award her a trophy for diversity.

Too late - she's already has had common sense steamrollered out of her, replaced with some barking mad rituals instead.

I just hope someday she will realise that she can have a profoundly exciting, happy and fulfilling life without the need for supernatural support and without the need for passing on such a need to her own children.

Four things that I heard: girl is videoed and is only doing and saying what mommy and daddy want her to do (no problem with that??); mommy coercises girl...."I told you to tell me before" (paraphrased); daddy tells five year old that Jesus and god loves her and it's OK to pray and that nobody can tell you not to pray......Hey, if this is what they believe, so be it; and lastly, little brother practicing his drum rudiments in background.....pretty good to......wants to play like Steve Gadd. Question? Why are so called Christians so paranoid? If they believe what they believe, they should figure out that something is just not right here. I cannot imagine a teacher telling anyone such things......unless those who are doing it believe that everyone else should do as they believe.....like the post who is self preaching to another UHH member about being saved. Folks, carry your faith in your heart, not on your sleeve or a bumper sticker.

Yes, you have the right to say that. But, why are you?
You're preaching the exact same thing that you're preaching against. You have no more right to tell people how to live than they have to tell you.

I don't really think that anybody listens to prayers, However, that a five year old can look at a plate of food and understand that it is something to be thankful for rather then something she deserves or is entitled to, is really what it is all about and in fact a part of why religion builds community. I am betting she doesn't reach across and steal anybody else food either. That's what the lunch monitor should concern her/himself with.

You may be right but it's what happens when this life is over that is in question. If you want to believe there is nothing after that's your call. I really don't care what you believe or don't believe but why is it that you feel the need to belittle those who believe differently than you considering you don't know that you are right in your assumptions. I'd suggest you not only allow but also support people in their freedom of choice....just sayin

The Constitution gives freedom of religion. Where is the right of the state or any other institution to deny religious actions of any kind that are within the religious boundaries and are limited to an age? And especially when done in a private manner?

If it is a school policy than it is wrong and should be stopped. One can pray in school but one cannot conduct a prayer session.

see: http://archive.adl.org/religion_ps_2004/prayer.html#.UzrkIPldVac

Schools are always at the brunt end of these kinds of things and they usually stop when brought to the principals attention.
