Sylvia - your observation about wild vs. captive colour is quite interesting. I would expect genetics to be the main factor, but I wonder if there can be some adaptation to a less hostile environment. Could not find anything with Google. Maybe others can add to my knowledge.
This was an adolescent we tracked a while in Kruger Private Reserves. The spots were pretty muted.
Dave - The density of the fur and the richness of the colours was what I meant. It may be because of the varied diet they have, I know when I go out trapping the feral cats on farms etc., to neuter, test and return, that live wild and are mainly wild, their coats are very much thicker and denser colours, if they are healthy, than many of the domestic cats brought in for adoption into the Orphanage.
Love the young one, just look at the size of the paws!! :D :-D

A few more from my travels in South Africa. The shot of the Wild Cat was through thicket, I could not see it! I laid on the floor and placed the camera with the 300 lens into the thicket. The Ranger asked me to slowly get up and walk backwards. Then I saw the Puff Adder, he said it was right near my trouser leg, no sound was heard when it appeared. He radioed for another Ranger to take it away, apparently they are highly dangerous. I quickly took a snap!! Went back to taking the shot of the Wild Cat.
