Nope, once the sun goes down regardless of location you can see it weather permitting and aren't blocked by trees and buildings. But mountains no.

I was joking about having to get on my roof but with regard to your reply, you might want to rethink your response although it's going to appear that I'm nitpickin' you. I'm sure you're thinking about distant mountains. Far mountains are one thing and you're right, but near mountains are another matter. There are folks who live in valleys nearby and only get about 4 hours a day of sunshine from mid-morning to mid-afternoon and yet it will be daylight hours considerably longer than that. They'll have to come out of there to see this event. Their view will indeed be blocked by mountains.

Wow! And I thought I was getting the short shrift with my six hours of sunlight. Mountains get in my way too. And they are soooo hard to move!!!

Here's a possible tip for taking images of the "conjunction" of the moon and Venus. I say "possible" tip because I have never tried this with a lens, only a telescope.

To get your stars to have points, like my shot below of Venus and the moon (from 5 or 6 years ago), you tape two pieces of string in a cross or "x" pattern across the front of your optics before you take the photo. I've used this with my 4" refractor telescope, but never a camera lens, so I am not positive how it will work. At least you have some time to try it out before the conjunction happens.

That's a great tip. Was wondering how you attached your camera to your telescope. I have an 8" reflector.

Hi everybody,

I was listening to Science Friday today on NPR. They featured an astronomer who spoke about the winter sky - stars, constellations and planets, etc. MARK YOUR CALENDARS - On JANUARY 26 there will be a crescent moon perched above the planet Venus. Venus is the brightest object in the western sky when the sun sets. I don't have powerful equipment but I thought this would be a great opportunity for anyone who has their camera rigged up to a telescope. I hope some people here will be able to capture this. I'm looking forward to seeing what the UHH community comes up with. I think it will be exciting. Just thought you'd want to know :-P Whitewitch

I have a telescope that I've had for years but I have no idea how to rig my camera up to it. I guess I better research that... :|

Try eBay, one of the guys I work with has just bought an adapter to be able to mount his 400D to his telescope.

I just spent half an hour taking pics. The best time is 6 pm and after. I havent downloaded yet. Unfortunately I'm new to this and my remote shutter release has yet to arrive so I tried quantity in the hopes of getting a few decent ones. By the way, if you go out at 6 and look straight up, that bright ''star'' is Jupiter and this Sunday it will be even closer to the moon. So if you miss tonight, you might get something better Sunday

Beautiful, Coco! Thanks so much for posting. It really turned out nice. It was cloudy here so I couldn't get anything but thank you for the heads up regarding Jupiter on Sunday. That's really nice to know. Hopefully the skies will be clear by then :-P

I heard that on the radio as well and have thinking about the best view around town with good foreground for photos. I am sure we will see lots of amazing shots.

I hope so! :-)
