Hi everybody,
I was listening to Science Friday today on NPR. They featured an astronomer who spoke about the winter sky - stars, constellations and planets, etc. MARK YOUR CALENDARS - On JANUARY 26 there will be a crescent moon perched above the planet Venus. Venus is the brightest object in the western sky when the sun sets. I don't have powerful equipment but I thought this would be a great opportunity for anyone who has their camera rigged up to a telescope. I hope some people here will be able to capture this. I'm looking forward to seeing what the UHH community comes up with. I think it will be exciting. Just thought you'd want to know :-P Whitewitch
That sounds awesome! I hope to see some great pics too!

I know! I can't wait to see the results.. 8-)
Here's a possible tip for taking images of the "conjunction" of the moon and Venus. I say "possible" tip because I have never tried this with a lens, only a telescope.
To get your stars to have points, like my shot below of Venus and the moon (from 5 or 6 years ago), you tape two pieces of string in a cross or "x" pattern across the front of your optics before you take the photo. I've used this with my 4" refractor telescope, but never a camera lens, so I am not positive how it will work. At least you have some time to try it out before the conjunction happens.

Well, thank you! I was told by another photographer that you can also use a piece of screen over the camera lens. Like window screen - now they make window screen out of some type of plasticky type material so you don't have to worry about damaging or scratching your lens. 8-) By the way, that's a really neat photo!
Geez, and I thought that my husband was the only one to listen to NPR.It's kinda a neat station.

I'm hooked on it. Science Friday is the best - it has the most interesting topics. Your husband must be a very smart guy! :P

I heard that on the radio as well and have thinking about the best view around town with good foreground for photos. I am sure we will see lots of amazing shots.

Will you be using your camera connected to a telescope or just your camera, like I will be doing? I really need to go to the country side. There are too many city lights around here. I hope it's clear that night.... :P

I have a telescope that I've had for years but I have no idea how to rig my camera up to it. I guess I better research that... :|
Does anyone know what part of the U.S. you will be able to see it best?
