I am retiring in two months so I can spend more quality time with my camera. My wife thinks I am nuts because I never sleep in when we are on vacation; "Hey, I have to catch the good light!"

Now that's dedication! I learned many years ago that there will be a sunrise tomorrow.

I do not know if this really fits in, but while working part time for LL Bean, we had a saying: "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
All you can do is try to fit the mood of the day into your photography. Of course I am retired so I can afford to wait. Of course waiting for a good day in Maine sometimes takes awhile. Good luck everyone.

Two solutions:
a) retire
b) change your work days to only when it rains

I like the second one

Others have given the answer, I will apply the alternative: Overcast is actually quite a blessing unless "sunrise" or "sunset" is the subject. No blowouts, even lighting, fewer shadows ... much better than bright sun at high noon.

It's funny isn't it. I drove 50 miles out to the Big Cypress to shoot some birds, all I saw were two squirels. On the way back I stopped at a park two miles from my house and there were twenty one Great White Egrets among all the other birds.

work is a dirty four letter word. in the words of the greatest arena rock band of the 70's " if you ever get annoyed look at us were self employed, we love to work at nothin each day. were Takin care of Business..." For the yougins that was a song by Bachman Turner Overdrive long before it was the office depot jingle.

on another note, don't curse overcast days, they are a blessing. overcast days turn the sky into a giant difussed softbox, and pumps up the color for flower shots, gives nice soft lighting for outdoor portraits, and makes it easier and cooler to shoot in the early afternoon.

I will never curse the overcast days just for those reasons
I just curse my timing for sunrises. There is nothing worse than portraits in the sun. You are so right!

Same thing we did ... drove 75 miles to the Lake hoping to see some hawks ... only ducks around ... on the way back while the hubby was driving nearly 80 mph I thought about snapping a shot of the freeway sign but then thought nah how boring ... then as we got closer ... there was a redtailed hawk sitting right on top of the sign ... not 10 ft from me .... when the shock finally wore off of actually seeing one I didn't have time to lift the camera before we were past it ..... Now if I had taken that shot that my instincts told me to in the first place I would have gotten quite a lucky surprise when I got home

It just shows you. Go with your instincts.
