I'd like to know why is it that I work while the beautiful
sunrises are happening and then I get up early on my day off and bundle up and drive all the way down into town and its overcast! LOL
You must be being punished for activities in a previous life. Try living better, or check the weather reports before going to bed. Not that that always helps since their wrong more than half the time anyway.

I would like to know the same thing. Stupid work getting in the way of fun.
Two solutions:
a) retire
b) change your work days to only when it rains
On several occasions I wanted to photograph sunrises in which cloud cover spoiled my shot. I just kept getting up day after day until finally I could get my shots. I have no animosity toward mother nature. I just take it in stride as I have grown accustom to in photography. The shots are always well worth the wait.
I am almost old enough to retire or at least collect the small amount of social security but I have considered just changing my jobs so I can start after sunrise. Pretty bad huh! But alas I realize photography is all about persistance and patience.
Ever hear of an old lawmaker named Murphy???
Boy it would be so nice, that every time we got up early we could get a outstanding photo. But that's life.

You live in Oregon. Isn't the appearance of the sun something like a solar eclipse for the rest of the world?

work is a dirty four letter word. in the words of the greatest arena rock band of the 70's " if you ever get annoyed look at us were self employed, we love to work at nothin each day. were Takin care of Business..." For the yougins that was a song by Bachman Turner Overdrive long before it was the office depot jingle.
on another note, don't curse overcast days, they are a blessing. overcast days turn the sky into a giant difussed softbox, and pumps up the color for flower shots, gives nice soft lighting for outdoor portraits, and makes it easier and cooler to shoot in the early afternoon.

I am retiring in two months so I can spend more quality time with my camera. My wife thinks I am nuts because I never sleep in when we are on vacation; "Hey, I have to catch the good light!"

It's because of the guardian angels you were issued.
Some of them have a morbid sense of humor and some of them make life easy.
Murphy's law was written by the humorous angels.
I have a lot of those comedian angels assigned to me.
I hope I don't become one.
