Why do so many spend $1200-$1500 on a camera, want to add a high end lens, then treat it like a p&s by leaving it in AUTO mode, and using free software to process the images, or worse, take the memory card to the corner store, then complain about the results? While CS5 is overkill, no free program, or one size fits all machine can come close to matching the results that can be achieved in programs such as Elements.
Why?
We all make our own choices
as we wish, for our own reasons.
Humans are not always
known for logic.
Overpriced, rather than overkill. I've been using Photoshop 4 for 10-15 years (it was the first imaging software I had, and it was current when I got it), and bought Elements recently for some of the features that my old Photoshop doesn't have, such as batch processing. Mistake! It is horribly limited.
Overall, though, I agree. But then, some photographers have always had strange priorities. In film days, I knew someone who had a Hasselblad outfit and always shot outdated film, then had it processed as cheaply as possible. The sad truth, I fear, is that cameras are seen as 'sexy' and attractive, while software (quite understandably) isn't.
Cheers,
R.
Because friends and family tell them their P&S photos are fantastic, so therefore a "pro" camera means they'll take "pro" photos. </rant>
As far as software, I don't think it makes that much of a difference, as long as it does what you need it to do. If someone is knowledgeable enough about composition, exposure, and lighting they may be able to get most if right in the camera. If you only need basic tweaks, you don't need a lot of software.

Define "anal" and "minor".
Guessing not the same for all.

You are correct, tongue in cheek. :)

Personally, I don't care what another spends on their camera equipment, editing programs, etc. Heck, why do people spend tens of thousands of dollars on cars, never drive them anywhere, and worship them. Just human nature I guess.

It is the small details that are the difference between a snap shot and a photograph.
I have heard some say -

I disagree, it's the big details that make the real difference.
