There is something about Railroad tracks that just seem timeless. Love the photo.

Thank you commenting on my picture. There is a timelessness to railroad tracks.

I didn't really get the feeling so much. The 1st picture does speak of abandonment, peeling paint, locked door, to me this one comes closest to expressing your emotions at that time.

The second picture, I see a small piece of track that looks rusty and therefor un-used but I also see what looks like shiny track, maybe not so abandoned.

The 3rd pic has a, well it has a train in it.

Just being contrary, saying it as I see it. Not saying they aren't good pictures, I like any kind of train pic but my take is you wanted to know more about the emotion conveyed than the comp of the pictures. That being said, thanks for sharing!

I will say that a couple of the tracks are used by a rail line that passes through the once busy yard. The last picture has more than just a train. It is the abandoned train station that my grandfather used to work in.

Thank you for commenting--I don't think you were being contrary. I asked if the pictures evoked any feeling and you offered your thoughts.

Those are great techniques--and again something I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I think that is the first example of the Orton effect that I have seen--cool! Thanks for showing me a couple of new things to add to my arsenal.

My son and I were photographing areas in the town where we grew up and I was giving him a short history lesson. When we came to what used to be the Canadian Pacific Railroad station, I was moved to tears. My grandfather was a conductor on this line and my grandmother and I used to take the passenger train to Canada.

I am hoping this set of pictures convey the feeling of isolation and abandonment I got while I was there. Do you think this set of pictures convey that feeling and what might I have done differently?

I did a little PP--levels and sharpening. My camera is a Canon Xsi and I was using my 18-135mm lens and I think I was shooting in auto--I have moved to manual but hadn't ventured that far at that time.

Yes it does say “Old and Depressing” to me. Hard to go back to wear me were kids and then try to show it to our kids. Something about pealing paint just gets me. As for being on Auto, I say why not, your taking pictures and trying to tell a story at the same time. I use my little green box for UFO’s and Paris Hilton, the rest of the time it’s AV mode.

Thank you for the nice pictures.

Thanks for looking at my pictures. It was so sad to see something that was important to my family and the whole town so neglected.

You know, that must be why I keep missing those shots of Big Foot and Babe the Blue Ox. Next time I go a looking' I'll put the camera on the green square!

I just read somewhere that they think there are 7000 Big Foots.
I do use the green box as a Tool. While taking pictures I will switch to the green box for one shot, just to see how I'm doing.

Sorry photogrl. I've seen some of your other work and it is very good, but I like the originals much better in this case. I think they need the full color.

Keep both your fond memories and the great photos. I think you did a good job at capturing isolation and abandonment. And personally, I don't care if you use auto or not. I just enjoy seeing other peoples photos, and enjoy taking them myself. Guess I'm not much of a critic.

The lack of rust on top of the tracks indicates that they are not tracks to nowhere. Trains are using those tracks enough to keep them nice and shiny, except for the far right track, which might be a spur that isn't used anymore.

By the way, I love your photos. My family (except for me) worked on the Missouri Pacific Railroad (Mo-Pac) in Texas. When my dad died in 1961, he was with Mo-Pac, and since he was a big whig, he had great life insurance, money which put me through college 15 years later at Texas A&M University.

I used to have several thousand pictures of trains throughout North America but lost 99% of them in the Great Hard Drive Crash of August 2005. I'm now too old to do all that traveling to try to get them back, so I really appreciate when I find great railroad pictures like yours.

Here in San Diego I can take pictures of the San Diego Trolley, Amtrak, the Coaster, the Sprinter, Metrolink, and BNSF, so I'm never at a loss to at least go trainwatching and get some new pictures.

Sometimes, like November 2010, Union Pacific brings its historic 844 steam engine through the area, which means I get to go train chasing.

Yes you are correct--as I said earlier, there is a line that does use some of those tracks as a through way once in a while. The station is now abandoned, the roundhouse demolished and no more yard engine. It is sad that a once thriving railroad community now boils down to a couple of tracks.

You are lucky to be able to see so many different trains going through. The only line that uses those tracks now is the B&A--Bangor & Aroostook.

Thank you for looking at my pictures, I would have loved to see some of yours. Sorry for your crash, that must have been horrible to loose all those pictures. I know because I recently had the same thing happen to me.
