I've always been annoyed by speech fads "Radical!" "go for it" "let's DO this", etc. But the new fad of starting every other sentence with "So" drives me NUTS! Especially annoying on NEWS shows like Fox Business channel where the people are SUPPOSED to be intelligent.
Sad how a word or phrase catches on so quickly.
Why do people feel such a need to copy how others talk?
Another one, almost as bad "I could care less".
The phrase should be "I could NOT care less".

KK, we studied too hard, accepted and conformed to the best authorities on effective communications. So many things will bother us, "you know what I mean" ... "like," "you know what I'm sayin". "Uh, like I really, you know, this stuff is important." Sheesh. We are plagued to be sensitive to the deterioration of our English language. Let's take our grandchildren by the ears, look them in the eye and tell them that each word is important in a thought and once said, it's history. Use them wisely.

Too right!

What makes me really sick though;
at times I inadvertently bow to the
onslaught of of the abattoir of English,
and use the crippled language of this
millennium. God help me!

Anyone who works at a large corporation would go nuts with all of the buzz words and buzz phrases...sometimes I have no idea what anyone is talking about!

One phrase I dislike is 'my bad' which is being used more often both on UHH and American TV. 'My Bad' what? The English language has various alternatives for saying 'sorry my mistake' why use a stupid nonsensical phrase like 'my bad'? I also think that people who are unable to string a sentence together with out using 'Ya know' and 'like' every other word should be taken out and thrashed to within an inch of their lives for crimes against the English language.

What gets me is business people talking in acronyms instead of speaking the words....I'm with rpavich...."I have no idea what anyone is talking about anymore!"

English is always in reform; it is we who don't.

What really trips my trigger is people who mispronounce the word "nuclear"...hence Pres Bush.

The second one is people who end a sentence with a preposition. As a matter of fact I just did it, didn't I?

What really bugs me is when someone's intonation, for virtually every sentence, is the same as when asking a question when simply they are simply stating a fact. Example - "I went to the beach today and saw a duck? Then I chased the duck into the water?" It was so much fun?"

Another obnoxious observation recently was a newscaster pronouncing Putin as "Pe-u-din". I found it hard to believe that after several days nobody corrected her. At least she didn't end every sentence sounding like she was asking a question.

Many people's speech is messed up with garbage phrases and words as well as misuses such as "I could care less." Toastmasters International has simple ways of curing people of such bad habits. However, most people continue to speak in a slovenly manner because they don't care, are unaware, or no one in authority cares to make them speak correctly.

The Toastmasters method is to station a member at the back of the room with a cowbell. When the speaker uses garbage words or phrases such as "you know," or "ugh," the member rings the cowbell. The speaker, previously unaware of how he is larding his speech with garbage, rapidly becomes aware.

In other contexts such as aviation communication, slovenly speech not only wastes time but can lead to tragedy. The worst plane-to-plane disaster in aviation history stemmed partly from poor comms. In personal experience I am sometimes privileged to be taken for small airplane rides by a pilot friend. His comms are awful beyond words. Whenever he flies he confuses and/or irritates controllers. Sometimes every controller he speaks with! My friend is clueless about his incompetence and blames the issues on the controllers being cranky. I have seen competent instructors try to give him tips, but no dice: he thinks he knows everything.
