The best moon shot I ever took ... so far and I noticed these spots ... which aren't on the photo of my dog taken just after... so I hit auto tone and omg what a mess
Does this mean my camera needs to go in for a good cleaning ? I just looked at the telephoto lens and it is dusty could it be just from that do you think ?

Hello photogrl57: Here is the website of one of our fellow UHH members he does all kinds of camera repair work, and at what seems to my to be a reasonable cost. So if your local repair shop doesn't work out he might, or he might advise you on how to do it yourself. Good luck. http://www.discountcamerarepair.com/

There is a filter called, if I recall right, a "low pass" filter in front of your sensor which is where your dust spots collect that put those spots on your images. The higher aperture number you use, the more the shots show up. Like on your dog, some don't show up because of the dark colors, others don't show up because of your shallow dof. The wider open you shoot, the less you'll see the spots. Go outside, put it on manual focus so auto focus won't keep seeking, aim at the a smooth part of the sky or cloud and shoot a shot at wide open and another totally closed down, if you're interested. You will see any spots that are present when closed down and not when wide open. That will at least let you know to shoot wide open when you don't feel like pp'ing, no pun intended... for a change. LOL! One thing that others may want to know is that you cannot effectively pp those spots out of video just in case anyone is thinking about doing some video. Before doing video a person would want to perform the sky test I suggested before hand so they could get the "sensor" clean before beginning. The test can also be done in adequate light with a piece of white paper or card stock. Here's Canon's offering about this. http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/infobank/capturing_the_image/sensor_cleaning.do Well, the European version anyway.

Looks good from here. Cool. If you haven't heard, when you change your lens, point the body down so if there's dust, it'll fall out instead of... I had to send my 5D MkII to Canon. It got oil and then dirt on it. I had a bunch of video that I had to just toss, about ten hours of work. Didn't know the dirt was there, still didn't after processing the video into an hour long clip with music and all, and still didn't see it 'til I recorded it to blu ray and played it on my 60" tv. Talk about hacked off. I even have a new 25" HP HDMI monitor and it didn't show up. Canon did a good job, $60 - 10 days turn around. I'm a little more careful now. I don't uncork my lens outside at all.

Funny you should say that ... with 5 heathens running around the house all day ... there is so much pet dander and dust inside I think I'd be better off doing it outside in a dust storm LOL. Seriously though yes I'm very careful to make sure I never leave it exposed even for 2 seconds.
When driving back from the Lake the other day we stopped for a hotdog at Dairy Queen .... sitting there eating it and my hubby reaches over and does the unthinkable.... I looked down and he was (what appeared to be using his thumb to wipe something off the lens) LOL I said "You did NOT just do that !!!" ... no he only touched the hood edge but you would have thought he set off a nuke the way I reacted LOL ... great memories.
