There is a post today asking people for feedback on Corel Paintshop Pro X6. This is a related question, and I decided to start a new thread rather than hijack the other one.

Isi there anyone here who made the transition from the older pre-Corel PSP to the more recent Corel versions?

I am using the old PSP 7, and reluctant to change since "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." For those who made the transition, what did you find to be the advantages to upgrading, and what challenges were there?

Thanks,
Mike

I've used JASC PSP practically from the beginning through the last version before Corel bought them out (v8?). Like you, I dragged my feet about buying Corel, mainly because I was so familiar with JASC and I also had Photoshop.

When I went to Win7 and my version of Photoshop would not work with it, I purchased PSP X5. Within days, I uninstalled JASC. The new version was familiar enough to be easy to pick up, yet so much more powerful. Since then, I have upgraded my Photoshop, but use Corel more often than PShop.

I haven't seen any reason to upgrade to X6. My rule of thumb is generally to wait for at least a 2 step upgrade before buying. But, for you, I wouldn't hesitate.

I also have Gimp, Adobe Elements 10 (came w the computer) and several other lesser known photo editing programs. For price point, power and ease of use, PSP is impressive.

I've used PSP since the very beginning. I've not upgraded to X6 because I see no reason to.

In the meantime, I've become a fan of LR5 which does things impossible with PSP and, of course, visa versa.

As to what program a person uses, it all depends on their needs. One is no better than the other as long as it does what you need to be done.

As far as PSP since Corel took over, I think some wonderful things have been added. I know all with not agree with me which is fine.

Thanks, Selkii. This good feedback. Just what I was hoping for.

I, too, have been with JASC since the very beginning.

Thanks, Gordon.

What kind of things are you doing with LR5 that you cannot do with PSP?

You could also look at Aftershot Pro to go with Paintshop Pro...

Thanks. I will check that out. Not familiar with it at all.

What I am looking at doing that I can't do now are HDR and focus stacking.

Ok..so for focusing stacking and HDR go with Photoshop or Paintshop Pro x6 Ultimate (I have the later of the two).

Aftershot is suppose to be a competitor to Lightroom, the only real comparisons I can find are from back in 2012. Aftershot apparently doesn't have as many plugins as Lightroom, but from what I read the plugins you do have are done with the RAW file and you can undo the plugin with the file still staying as RAW - which I know is true since I've done it many of times.

Download the two and play around, I also have the View NX2 (that came with the camera) but I am able to do more with Aftershot then the NX2.

Thanks GP

I began my ride with Paintshop Pro version 7 from JASC. I loved it from the start and was amazed at what it would do for me. Looking at Paintshop Pro X6 Ultimate I am almost amazed at two things.

1. How much X6 still looks like the old version 7 (generally speaking) and how much of version 7 with improvements has migrated into X6.

2. How much more Corel has added and added to make X6 so much more powerful and yet kept the ease of use.

I am extremely happy with X6 Ultimate and wouldn't consider going back to any previous versions of Paintshop Pro nor would I consider tackling the learning curve for the Adobe software. I have looked at Aftershot Pro and I don't think it does much that can't be accomplished with X6 Ultimate as X6 Ultimate seems to do everything the average post-processor needs to do. I also doubt that Aftershot Pro can compete well with Lightroom. Both Paintshop Pro X6 Ultimate and Aftershot Pro have free 30 day trial downloads. Download them and try them out before you buy.

Have a GREAT DAY!

Jasz (PaintShop) and Adobe (Photoshop) came on the market about the same time. I believe Adobe was first, followed a short time later by Jasz. At the time, the cost of each was reasonable and I bought both to try.

For whatever reason I like Jasz better than Adobe - not sure, but I believe that Adobe's save function created a DNG and nothing else and only Adobe could read it; they wanted to do the same thing with images as they were doing with Acrobat - which they were unable to accomplish. Jasz save was the generic JPG that could be read by most anything else. Adobe's arrogance turned me off and I've stayed with and updated every PaintShop since. I don't use it a lot because since I started with Nikon in 2005 I've found that their Capture NX does all that I want. I go to PaintShop when I want something beyond.

I've still got PSP5 on my pc.. and still use it occasionally... I also have PSPx4 which I use most of the time.. Between the two of them and irfan view...they do all the post processing that I need. Horses for courses and all that

That is great feedback. Thanks!

When Corel first took over PSP from JASC I didn't like it, and stayed with JASC version 7. I guess a few years have gone by since then - hey time flies when you're having fun.

Yes, that was my thinking at the time - 1998? - and money was an issue then as well.
