They orbit the Earth in roughly 24 hours so that they appear stationary. If you took the M-42 photo and did not track on the stars, the satellites would appear as point-like while the stars would have been trailed. In other words just the opposite of the photo you have here. Keep up the good work, please post more images.
Thanks for the kind words algol, and thanks for clearing up what the satellite trails are exactly. I thought they might be geosynchronous but just couldn't get my head wrapped around it .your explanation cleared it up for me
