Err... Only image #3 and #4 have a 'real bokeh' the other two are good picture but the 'bokeh' is reduced to a confusion. Then this was supposed to be 'landscape' and only #1 has something close to a landscape in the background... By the way, how do you produce discernible 'bokeh' in a landscape???

An interview with cat2560,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
On and off for about 20 years

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Just a community college course….mostly landscape

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
for me..color, clarity and subject matter

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Nikon d5100, no special setup..just right place, right time

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
open in i-photo first..then depending on what I want final image to look like, into Photomatix or Perfect Effects 8, then into Elements 11 for final tweaking, sharpening…

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
This site has influenced me a lot! On this shot? I just think the frost and snow on the bright red berries is beautiful and peaceful..

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I wish I had a real macro lens…

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How to really utilize all my camera settings..

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My filters

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I don't know exactly which one, but it would be a wide angle with excellent glass…because they produce such clarity and detail…

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I don't have any real lighting equipment..but I never leave home without my trusty flashlights

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Just go and enjoy the view..I love to travel!

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
My photography teacher told us once to climb some fences..go where you wouldn't normally go..challenge yourselves…and I have…

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
just on this site

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Keep shooting!

An interview with Nikonian72,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
As a teenager, I used my father's Argus C3, then purchased my first Nikon in 1972 while in the US Navy.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have a BA degree from Brooks Institute of Photography, 1979. 90% of my current effort is True Macro-Photography.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Composition first, interest second.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
Hand-held D5200, Nikkor 105G macro lens, Nikon SB-600 speedlight with 6x8-in FotoDiox softbox diffuser. Pictured here: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-4.html#1975173

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I loved the old Picasa 3, but now use Fast Stone Image Viewer to minimally edit my raw images. Slight adjustments of contrast, exposure, color saturation, and finally cropping.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I am influenced by the core group in the UHH Section of True Macro-Photography Forum. We are literally scattered across the world, but critique & encourage each other daily. Most of my macro-photography subjects are 6-inches in front of lens at f/16, but this large grass seed head needed to be isolated from background by a narrow DoF, so f/4.5 was selected.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
About this photo? No. Final image exactly as wanted.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I enrolled in Brooks because of the urging of others, based on my natural talent with a camera. Biggest mistake of my life. I should have kept photography as a hobby instead of a vocation.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My 1972-era Kalt L-Grip Flash Bracket, which is now on my seventh Nikon body.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Of my personal lenses, the Nikkor 105G; if I had my choice, maybe the Sigma 150-mm macro, for the extras reach, and the special selector slide for limiting focal range from macro to very close.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Nikon SB-600 speedlight with 6x8-in FotoDiox softbox diffuser.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Have not a clue.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
While on photo assignments, I have been chased out of the ocean twice by sharks: one was dark, fast and in 30-feet of murky water; the other was 2-feet long, and in less than 1-foot of water. Little sucker bumped my leg while I was photographing tiny coral polyps in a shallow coral reef. I never jumped so high, and nearly peed my shorts.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
http://500px.com/Nikonian72 & http://www.flickr.com/photos/Nikonian72

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Find your photography niche, find photo partners with the same interests, and have fun. Never stop learning.

An interview with gpro111,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have only been active in photography about a year and a half. I learned on a Pentax film camera about 30 years ago, but haven't done much since.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I don't have any formal training, but have relied on this website and several photo groups to learn what I can about composition, lighting, and basically how to use my camera.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
I think the point of view, such as in this picture of the mushroom. I had to lay down to get the shot but I knew it would be good with the soft grass and the muted background. Otherwise it is just another mushroom.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
There was no special equipment or setup, I use a Nikon D5200 and the kit lens 55-200 for this shot.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I do post process and on this one I didn't do a lot. I cropped slightly, some sharpening and noise removal, played with the shadow slider and highlights but not very much. I shoot in RAW and find I can fine tune my shots when I get home. This has worked well for me.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I have always been creative, and love looking at how different photographers portray and present their work. I try to learn what works and what doesn't.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Probably use a tripod as this was handheld. When I zoom and pixel peep, I would like for it to be sharper.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Composition!!! Who knew the flower shouldn't be in the middle?? To me that looked great. I still struggle but am getting better.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My hoodman loupe. I can't tell you how many times I have taken some great shots only to find out when I got home that I didn't get what I saw. It allows me to view my work in the field, without Florida glare, and make the appropriate adjustments.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I have a 50 mm prime lens that I love. I have taken some great shots with that lens and it makes me really think about composition.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I don't take any...

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Probably paint, or cook

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Not really, I have a group of about 100 parrots that live in my backyard neighborhood, and a chicken showed up a couple of weeks ago as well as a pair of eagles. That makes my backyard more than interesting.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Not yet...

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Relax...and shoot every day. What's the worst that can happen? You waste some digital film.

Last week there were a couple of threads concerning the definition of bokeh. After seeing the results of the voting there should have been a discussion on what the definition of a landscape is.

Wow just pathetic!! Some nice photos but it seems that those that have decent bokeh are not scenery shots and the ones that have scenery have no bokeh. 1st off Bad Subject as shown by the entries inability to conform to the theme. Does anyone try shooting said subject before posting it as a contest theme?? From day 1 many were placing concerns about subject and as usual nothing was done with photos that did not conform were not removed which would have left you with 0 photos!!! Same old song and dance..........

After reading a ton of pages of debate over what bokeh actually means, and not a whole lot of agreement, I had to go with the dictionary definition, which I looked up and Steve posted. Most, or all the pictures met the dictionary definition of bokeh. The landscape part was mentioned, but not discussed much, so what that meant is up to interpretation even more.

Anyway, while many of the 250 people that submitted pictures probably don't fully agree on what the criteria meant (half the fun of the contests I believe) at least some of them seemed to meet even the strictest definitions presented.

The fact you feel "0" photo's met it should make you wonder if you might be missing something? It certainly makes me wonder exactly what you thought it meant?

Personally, I know my understanding of what bokeh landscape means has been broadened but no where near thinking the contest was "pathetic" or that 'no' submissions met the criteria.

I apologize for my blanket statement but was just frustrated with this ongoing deviation from the theme. Nikonian's photo of the wild grass is what I call bokeh. The winner of the contest had merely a blurred background and yes if you really stretch you imagination could be a landscape. Have looked in 2 Webster dictionaries and nowhere did I even find the word bokeh. I guess you can explain how you see no difference between one having true bokeh and the other merely a blurred background which you can accomplish with even the cheapest of PP programs. I didn't mean to discredit anyone's photo but as with others saying what is bokeh to some is merely a blurred background to others..........
