Douglass has asked that I update my Macro setup. I’m now using the Wimberley Macro Bracket with a 430EXII Speedlite mounted off camera, along with a homemade diffuser. For extra closeup work, I attach the Raynox M-250 Closeup lens to the Canon 100mm Macro. The camera is a Canon 7D.

I finally ordered a 6-in x 8-in softbox diffuser. I am amazed at how little light is required. I am using 1/8-power on my SB-600. Here are two views of my set-up, which is always hand-held. (Tripod-held here, just so I could photograph set-up)

I use a Canon 7D with a Canon 100mm f2.8 L macro lens, a DIY plastic (chip can) adapter & a cowboy studios 4x6 inch diffuser on a Vivitar flash, a Vivitar flip bracket that I modified and a Neewer ring flash.

I modified the flip bracket by cutting the bracket next to the flash and bending it 45 degrees. I also took a extra mounting bracket and put it on the flash bracket arm to mount the battery pack for the ring light. I also use the new bracket mount when taking non-macro photos to mount the flash. I use the ring light to help me focus and it seems to help reduce shadows.

Latest shots of my macro setups: Nikon D300 with the Lester Dine 105mm f/2.8 MF macro lens & also fitted with a Lester Dine ring/point light (Point light is moveable around the circumference of the ring light, I have it down in this shot so as not to stress the lens mount). Then a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma EX 105mm f/2.8 AF macro lens, fitted with a Nikon SB600 on a bounce shoe & with a Pixco mini softbox... Shot with a Canon Powershot SX100 IS

Pentax K-r, Tamron SP Di 90-mm macro, with Jessop extension tubes, Yongnuo YN560-II speedlight.

The first is the setup I generally use when using extension tubes, not sure about results being any different, as when used with either it is hard to tell which was used, but just seems to be easier to handle, since it is lighter, diffuser made out of a couple beer cans with paper towel.

The second cardboard 6-in x 7-in, with no extension tubes is easier to handle, but does get in the way a bit more though.

I have used a ball joint flash bracket on the handle a couple of times but seem to end up spending my time tweaking position rather than shooting, it also has the ability to carry 8 spare AA batteries.

This is my modification of the Velbon super mag macro rail I made to utilize the rail for focus stacking.

This shows the camera mounted on the rail. The clearance above rail allows the mounting of the Nikon R1C1 flash.
