Hi. I really need some help here. I just got back from the WPPI show in Las Vegas. Attended many classes and when one of the instructors asked "Who here shoots Nikon?" I was shocked when only a handful of people raised their hands in a room filled with over 300 people. I shoot Nikon and I asked myself... What am I missing??? As the conference progressed I noticed those shooting Cannon the colors were vibrant, super clear, amazing!!! (We are talking DSLR professional Level cameras) Those shooting Nikon, the colors were dull and did not have the crispness I love in pictures.
Sorry this is so long but I am really battling with this. I own a Nikon D700 which I know needs to be upgraded, but I am really thinking of switching over to Cannon. Yes it is the person behind the camera that makes the difference but after this conference I really think Cannon has surpassed Nikon in technology. Can I please get your thoughts on this and any help you can give me in making my decision. Thanks so much.

First things first. A cannon is a weapon of war, Canon is a camera.

Second, Canon has been making high quality gear much longer than Nikon. Actually it's Nikon that's been playing catch up for low these several years.

I agree, Canon does a much nicer job in all aspects of photography but of course Nikon loyals will probably disagree but hey, that's okay, each to his own sort of thing.

I've been shooting Canon dslr cameras for several years now and have never been disappointed by the camera. My own mistakes are another matter but never a problem with any of the three that I've owned.

I'm currently shooting a t3i, doing quite a bit of video with it and it's giving me excellent results.

Look here for my latest effort, shot with my t3i. Understand there is extra equipment involved here so there's more to it than just the camera but I'd have to say the camera is doing an excellent job.

lol @ thread. If you want 'vibrant' in Nikon, just use your setup. Canon defaults to 'vibrant'. There is no hidden secret here. Nikon also has weird 'defaults' and quite honestly I am a bit aggravated not by the camera brand technology (there are differences) but by their aim at pushing their own flavors of what is right and what is wrong. Neither wins. I shoot raw and screw the brand dictatorship on what an image should look like.

This is not about Canon vs Nikon but about being independent and free from meddling.

Just looking at pictures can't be a fair judgement. What cameras were used, what lens? Comparing a D40 with a kit lens and trying to compare it to a with a 1D with "L" glass just don't give a fair assessment of the cameras, lens and pictures.

Why are you going to Seminars and looking at other attendee's work for comparisons.

They are spending the same money you are for the same reason. Something about what they are doing is making them unhappy about their results.

Hence the large nick in their wallet.

Seminars tend to be made up of large groups of people who love to commiserate about their problems. Many people you talk to come home with more issues than they resolve.

Look at you?

The benefits of Seminars should be being guided by a good Seminar leader who shares new techniques and offers a learning experience.

The mere fact that you had so much time to compare your tools to others tools smacks of a poorly controlled seminar.

Did you come home with anything other than a lame dislike for the camera you now shoot.

Money well spent, right?

Can I assume the Seminar was a waste of your time and money, or were there good learning aspects that would be of more benefit to the other Hawgers here.

I'm very happy with my Canon, but Nikon also makes fine cameras. Or so I've heard anyway. :D Isn't there someplace in your area where you can rent a Canon for a day or two to see if it does what you want. Same thing with a newer Nikon then what you are currently using. Or shoot with a friend who has a Canon and compare the results.

I would hold off switching to Canon until you know how to spell it. :-)

Seriously, though... You are not missing anything. Stick with what you have. Of course, this is coming from someone who has Nikon envy. Maybe we should switch? I'll give you my 6D for a month, and you give me your D700. After a month, if either of us don't like what we have, then we can switch back! :-)

No... The Seminar was not a waste of my time. And no one I spoke with was comparing cameras. It was just something I noticed. The seminar was all about correct posing of your subjects, how to make your photography business better, etc. The one tidbit I could share with all of us Hawgers is if you are trying to make your photography into a business you have to give it all you got. You have to deliver more than your customer expects. Repeat business and word of mouth is everything in this industry. And a good Facebook page doesn't hurt.

Thank you for clearing me up on how to spell Canon. Goes to show you how little I know about the camera.

Just relax in a quiet, dark room. Drink lots of fluids. Stay away from the hallucigens. The feeling will pass and you will be back to normal as soon as your system is flushed clean. :D

I have tried the vibrant setting on my Nikon and I don't like what it does. I shoot manual raw and its not that I don't like my pictures, it just seemed the quality coming out of the Canons were far better than my Nikon. Yes, some of it is the person behind the camera but I do think some of it is the camera. Thanks for your response.

I do not agree with that when it comes to camera output. The person behind it has nothing to do with the manufacturer bias.

Good or bad the monkey pressing the button has no choice. Cut the tree and make it walk.
