You are on the right track! Keep shooting. Something you may keep in mind that I read from Rohn Engh book, "Sell and Resell you Photos" for editorial photographs. I think it goes like this: There are three things you need for editorial photographs or telling a story: 1. People, 2. an object, 3, envolvement. Imagine the two boys in the wagon. How much more effective it would have been if they were facing one another and one was gazing at the apple waiting for his bite, while the other was taking his bite. How about the boy with the apple and the basket. Reshoot with the other boy holding the basket. Now it would say..gathering apples with my brother. People, Object, envolvement. Here is an example, Not the best but...
Ice Cream...uhmmm.
This is another thing i love about this forum - there are always kind people willing to take the time to let you know what they see you could do to improve the photo - it may be a great photo but with their input - who knows next shot you take may be award-winning. It is the little details and the composition that I love to learn more and more about, and this forum is wonderful for that - I feel I have learned so much from the posts and others critiques of them. Then when I take a photo these things will be in the back of my mind to pay special attention.

I think you did a wonderful job in telling the story!! I did however crop your pic and edit the lighting to show you how you could have improved your shot by taking away some of the things that should have been excluded to bring focus to your subject(s).
