That makes it an easy choice, then.

 I agree, takes all the guesswork out of it.
Fun aside, probably comes down to the same advice given by so many, that is to check out both side by side and decide by how you like them, after you handled them, so how they feel to you. Both are excellent cameras, the 24 mp will give you just a smidge more resolution, while the rebel will give you just a tiny bit faster AF (especially in low light).

There are many reviews on both cameras that can be easily seen on the web. Asking a forum like this isn't going to net any good advice since those that own one model verses the other will only recommend it and vise verse. I doubt there's a person here that actually owns both that will give you an unbiased opinion of which one is better.

I am going to upgrade to a new camera and was wondering which would be the best choice, a Nikon D3200 or a Cannon T3i. Both are in the price range that I can afford.I can purchase both bundled at Sams. The Nikon has more mega pixels (24) than the Cannon (18). The Cannon has a tilting led screen that is better for videos. Is there that much difference in the mega pixels for a non professional photographer? Each camera has its plusses and minuses. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with both who would be willing to share. I used to have a Minolta SRT 101 that was all manual so I have some experience in photography. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have used both cameras, both are really very nice. Both cameras are much better than any digital camera that could be purchased just several years ago.

The Cannon does have the articulating viewer which you will not use except for video and then it is priceless. It is especially nice when you mount to a tripod and shoot high above everybody else.

The Nikon 3200 is an amazing entry level camera. The 24 megapixel sensor does make a difference. Most non-professional photographers and many professionals will take many pictures and hope they get one good one. "Digital Film is cheap" so the expression goes. Being able to take a picture that was crooked or improperly aimed and being able to recover by cropping is a feature that the D3200 has way above the Cannon. I personally think the low light sensitivity is better on the Nikon.

There is one thing I think you could do to get the best of both worlds and that would be to move up to the Nikon D5200. You should be able to find it for about $200 more than the D3200 It has more focus points and an articulating display as well as several other features.

I think both cameras are better than the kit lenses that come with them, usually the 18-55mm. That lens is not bad, hardly but it only opens to f3.5 wide and shuts down to f5.6 long on both of them, I think. You could get inexpensive primes for both so that you could take pictures indoors without using a flash.

Both cameras use cropped sensors so if you purchase primes take into account the apparent size. On the cropped sensor the 35mm would act more like a 50mm on a 35mm class sensor. The 35mm lens for both cameras are all nice and would make a great first addition.

Good luck.

Hi Hafmyne, don't restrict yourself, also consider, Sony Alfa7R, PentaxK% and Olympus OM10 series, all these alternatives produce excellent images and you could save yourself a small fortune.
Cheers, John.

As the thread seems to bifurcate between cameras and spelling, what's PentaxK% ?
:)

Likely K5 as the % sign is what you get when you use the caps key & the #5 button

Actually it's Canon - but then you're probably read that already.

The MP count doesn't make much difference until you get into large photos - huge enlargements. For average viewing on a computer screen, a television or printing even 10 is very sufficient.

I own a t3i, an excellent camera, for both video and stills.

Buy a refurb direct from Canon. Same 1 yr warranty as a new camera. I purchased refurb from Canon and it looked like new and functioned perfectly. Lots of pros buy refurbs. Use the money you save and buy accessories like a spare battery, large capacity SD card, camera bag, or a nifty fifty.

You mentioned a Sam's bundle. Don't know what it includes but if it comes with both 18-55 and 55-250 lenses plus some other stuff then it might be worth getting it from them. When I bought my T2i I got a bundle with those lenses and for a long time it was all I needed. Some people put down those kit lenses but I would bet you will be more than happy with them.

Or buy a 55-250 refurb and save more.

IF his brother has a Canon then HE should buy a Sony so his brother will constantly ask him to borrow it and he can turn him down!

Because that's what happens you know; Canikon users who get their hands on a Sony USUALLY want to keep it. ;)

Cholly, that's not always a good idea. Yes, I shoot a Canon, and my best friend, well, used to be my friend, shot with a Sony and would never let me borrow it. Always did this thing he called "gloating", and say, "get your own Sony"! I'd Pull on the Sony but he would never let go!!
Well, I now have my own Sony and hardly ever use it, but I use the hand even less!!

Right. Not sure how one could make such an error. The “r” key is a “right hand” key, and on the TOP row, whereas the “n” key is a “left hand” key, and on the BOTTOM row. Whatever.

You left out, though, that “Cannon” is also a military weapon that fires large, heavy projectiles.

Hi Hafmyne,
My first real camera was a Minolta SRT 101. I still use it. It takes great pictures. When someone mentions the SRT 101 it brings back many fond memories
Take care,
Emp.

KB, In college, I once wrote an entire short story with the keyboard upside down! Turned it in and never even noticed till I sobered up!
Still got a B+ on it!!

Agree, in part. My philosophy is, if you don’t have the time to do it right the first time, how are you going to have time to do it again?

Sorry, but no excuse for “Cannor”.

And, as for those who spell “Cannon” when referring to their cameras, they should only look at the darn thing and see how the manufacturer spells it.

Nikon resolution 6016 x 4000 /300 = 20"x13.33.." print size
Canon resolution 5184 x 3456 /300 = 17.28x11.52" print size

Don't let yourself get caught up in the pixel war.
Try each camera and see which one 'feels' better to you.
