I took these birds photos mid morning at the Moccasin Island Tract which is located 3.5 miles west of Viera Wetlands, Florida.

I used my Nikon D300 camera with a Nikon 500mm f-4 manual lens with a 1.4X Teleconverter. These photo were taken from inside my car and 500mm lens was set on a beanbag which rested on the open car window.

Camera Settings
.........ISO........F-stop.........Speed
#1.....400........5.6.............1/1000
#2.....400........7.1.............1/1000
#3.....400........8.0.............1/1250

I used LR3 to enhance all three of these photos and PS CS4 and Topaz Adjust 5 for the 3rd one.

I would appreciate your comments and critiques. Arnold

Loggerhead Shrike: Seems pixelated w/ halo is the film speed to high or poor image compression.

Thanks for sharing.

Godawful, Thank you very much for your critique. Yes, it is pixelated because I crop into 11% of the original size of this photo. I used Topaz Adjust 5 and it caused some pixelation and the halo around the bird. Arnold

How did you get that Kestrel to stand still I swear the only way I will get a good shot like yours is to stuff one and put it in a tree. Nice work!

Phocus, I know these birds are very skittish. What help me was capturing this image from inside my car. I found a car is a very good blind for taking photos of birds. Arnold

Very nice shots. I see you have your watermark (copyright?) on these photos. I don't usually do this and wonder what you think about the chances that photos posted without it will be copied and used by other members for profit. I've always thought mine were not that great, but am beginning to wonder.

Gayle, Watermark/Copyright will and cannot stop a person from copying it from the Internet and possibly using for profit. I normally put low resolution copy, with my info embedded EXIF data, Watermark/Copyright on the photo. This may slow them down, but will not stop them from downloading my photos from the Internet. Arnold

I would like to know what you point of focus is when using such a long lens with a teleconverter. I really admire all of your bird shots.

Billy, I normally look for a high contrasting area of the bird to focus and it normally near the bird's head. In low light I have a hard time focusing this manual 500mm lens with the Teleconverter. Arnold
