I'd go for something with a brighter lens than what the sx50 has to offer...especially if you are taking pictures inside the cruise ship. The lx-7 has a f1.4 lens.

I will check it out, wasn't thinking to much about the inside pics, and a lot would be inside as well as outside, something else to think about. And if I bring the T3i, I should probably bring my flash too, another thing to lug around, lol. Well I have been thinking about the sx50 anyway, now I can compare it to the lx-7, and maybe get one of them, we'll see :)

I'd be wanting to focus on the kids so I'd leave the DSLR home and take the SX-50.

Edit: I just noticed the "focus" on the kids. I guess you could do that with either so I'd stay with the freedom and the less time consuming option.

They love Mickey Mouse and them all, so I want to get some good character pics with them :)

tough to compare the two, since one is a super zoom and one is high quality bridge camera. They both take excellent images, it just depends on what you want to do with it.

If you're taking both, then I'd find something smaller than the sx-50. The sx-50 is $388 on amazon, keep in mind extra batteries and a memory card, and potentally a little bag, unless you have one, and you've pushed yourself into the $420 range...keep in mind it's not small.

An Lx-7 or Xz-2 are $300 right now, or about $350 if you want extra batteries, a card and small bag.

An S110 is $250, and is so small that you can toss it in a pocket...add $50 for a card, and some extra batteries.

I'd recommend the rx100, but it's still so darn expensive at $550, but it too is pocketable.

50 1.4 for onboard. 18-135 for excursions. Travel lite. I bring a small travel tripod . But only if you have room. If only one it would be the Zoom

Wizbird, can you recommend a good travel tripod with quick release head. I liked the Silk but no q-release.
What to take on the cruise, both. Let someone else use the Canon while you have fun with the T3i. We're going on a cruise in Oct. Wife can use point & shoot while I use my NEX6.

we have been on 2 cruises, I brought my Canon 7D on an Alaskan cruise. which if you are bringing a DSLR and extra lens, I would guess your camera bag is big enough for a couple extra lenses, so you might as well fill the bag.
the other cruise we did was a Caribbean cruise, for this I brought a small waterproof point and shoot. I didn't have to worry about sand on the beaches, I took it tubing down the White River in Jamaica, and snorkeling in Cozumel. although it was only a 3 time zoom and focus was slow, it was nice to enjoy the vacation without worrying a lot of camera gear. and I still brought home pictures of our trip.
I would say leave the Dslr at home. get a small point and shoot and enjoy the trip with your grandkids. don't spend your trip looking through a view finder

Ok, so I'm planning on taking the grandkids on a Disney Cruise in Oct, should I bring my T3i with one or several lens, ( sigma 24-70, canon 55-250, 18-55, I do have a couple other lens, but don't think they would be right for this, or I was thinking about buying a canon sx50, what are your thoughts?

If you thinking of buying, I would suggest one of the many fine cameras that will fit into a Velcro-closure case on your belt. See something interesting? Flip open the case and take the shot. Even if you bring a "better" camera, I find a belt camera to be indispensable.

As for the other gear, the more lenses and equipment you bring, the more of a hassle it will be. It is possible to enjoy a trip and also come home with great pictures.

Bring a lot of memory cards.

Yes I do have a good size bag, 6 lens, most are the kit lens, but do the job, just recently got the Sigma 24-70 2.8, love it and have a wish list a mile long, lol. I was gonna get the Sigma 150-500, but..... the cruise for the Kids got in the way, lol, maybe next year. But I am trying to lighten the load with one camera, that's why I was thinking the sx50. Seems like everywhere I go, I'm looking through the viewfinder :)

Yes, I am trying to avoid the hassle of all the equipment, and yes memory cards and batteries. Hey, is the Catskill Game Farm still in operation, used to go there several (many, many) years ago, used to love it:)

also, what I find very helpful on a cruise, is..........bring a multi- extension cord, as so it will be easier, to charge your equipment as outlets as menchioned in a cruise ship cabin are gennerally few......

Have to agree... a brighter lens and smaller like the Panasonic Lumix LX7. Love mine. Can't imagine anyone wanting to lug a DSLR and lenses around a ship or shore excursions. Even the Canon SX50 is too big for comfort. If I were to go on another cruise and could take only one camera, it would be my LX7 even though I have a total of six cameras including two DSLRs.

I agree with you, when I first started cruiseing, I use to bring my Nikon D300, with assorted long Nikon Lenses
now I bring my Leica DLux-6 with it 1.2 very fast lens , or my Nikon 1 AW1 Mirrorless Waterproof Camera, which also gives me, stellar results, either in or out of the water, plus both of my cameras are capable of 1080P Video.......
