Good biblical scholarship affirms that the Gospel of Mark ends at chapter 16, verse 8. The following verses, which mention snakes, form a later addition written to "smooth out" the abrupt ending. Either the author of the gospel intended to end it that way, or the real ending was lost. The entire practice of snake-handling, therefore, is based on a "passage" that is not found in the oldest manuscripts, and therefore is not valid. The King James includes it, but in 1611 many of the manuscripts had not yet been discovered.

rhyde....Thanks for pointing this out. I did a little research, and even my Greek text by Metzger (an older one I admit) contained the longer version with a note about the shorter version. The NASB contains the longer version. The link below is an excellent discussion by Dan Wallace as to why Mark 16:9-20 is not authentic to Mark.

Well, Ray, let's see, Jesus was there. Do you think that it might have been remotely possible that he told this story to his disciples? This is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. It occurred after Jesus was Baptized by John and he went into the wilderness. Since it was recorded in three Gospels, my guess is that it was a story well known by the disciples.
The only witnesses were Jesus and Satan. Well I guess Jesus wouldn't lie. The devil on the other hand, I am sure would deny everything. I am sure that Jesus the son of god would listen to the devil and do exactly what he asked. How can ANYONE believe this nonsense?

What are you talking about? Jesus would listen to the devil and do exactly what he asked? Actually, the temptation of Christ by Satan is significant theologically. It shows that while Jesus as a man was exposed to all of the temptations that we as men are, yet, as God, He had the power to resist them. This is why the story of His temptations in the wilderness are so important, and why he told his disciples about them.

Since Jesus had 12 original apostles and Luke never met Jesus personally, I can imagine that Luke heard the story from one of the originals as supposedly told by Jesus. So we have a story that started with Jesus, was told to his original 12 apostles, passed on to Luke who was not one of the original 12, wrote about it in his gospels and it traveled throughout time passing along various languages and interpretations to the present. I would think the chain of evidence would be compromised. Mythology has also survived the ages. I really can't see the difference.

I wonder how much of the Bible was "smooth out".

Snake venom in the human blood stream don't mix. Oh yeah, & by the way. God don't work either.
Hell, I wouldn't work either if I were god. Obama must believe he is god, he's trying to make it so no one has to work.

Listen to Dan, Ray. Dan is a textual critic, and he assured Christians that this one instance should not make Christians question the text of the Bible. The whole question really came to a point when Codex Sinaiiticus was discovered in the 19th century. It's a 4th century manuscript that contains the entire N.T. and 1/2 of the O.T., but it does not contain Mark 16:9-20.

Let's see. I think for Christians Sunday is the Sabbath. A day of rest. For the Jewish I thought it was Saturday. For the Muslims I don't think there is a day off. So many suicide vests and IED's to build and so little time. Apparently in Obummer's world everyday is the Sabbath. So much golf to be played and so little time.
Since we're on the subject of religion:
(A true Story from an Irish Sunday School Teacher)
I was testing children in my Dublin Sunday school class to see if
they understood the concept of getting to heaven. I asked them,
"If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money
to the church, would that get me into heaven?"
"NO!" the children answered.
"If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the garden, and kept
everything tidy, would that get me into heaven?"
Again, the answer was NO!
"If I gave sweets to all the children, and loved my husband, would
that get me into heaven?"
Again, they all answered NO!
I was just bursting with pride for them. I continued, "Then how can
I get into heaven?"
A little boy shouted out, "YUV GOTTA BE FOOKN' DEAD."
It's a curious race, the Irish.

One could argue that the mighty Trouser snake crossed her path at some stage.
Or was there another immaculate conception there we weren't told about?
