Ya, I am considering swapping allegiance and going with the Nikons. The D800 is the "new" "medium format."
Joe, don't kid yourself, a FF will never be a MF. I have seen some Pentax systems, on the used market, for reasonable amounts.
Have you considered an inexpensive 4x5 camera. They can be found very inexpensively. If your photography is calculating, you won't waste shots. You can always chimp with a digital. Yes they are $5 per shot, but a drum scanned digital file from a 4x5 can't be touched by any FF digital camera. A woman that comes to my club once in a while, has shown 40"x50" color prints that have detail and colors that are hard to believe, or even imagine.
But if you want it for quick grab shots, that's not for you.
Good luck.
Many tiny pixels, is not the same as many big pixels, but maybe that doesn't matter to you. Good luck ;-)

Agreed!
It isn't just the size of the pixels either.
Each format can have a distinctly different look, if one knows what to look for.

For a pro, a camera is not a toy. I think it's sometimes difficult for an amateur to relate to that. When their are no do-overs, there is no explaining yourself to an editor.
how are your finances?645d's can be had for $6000- $8000.00. you have a wide selection of 645 film lenses to choose from the are reasonable and work well with a digital camera.
Not sure what you want this for; not counting excess pixels one hopes. Sensational photos have been taken for the last 100 years.

because things like this keep the camera people in business.
"because things like this keep the camera people in business."
- Uphill battle that. 43% decrease in DSLR AND compact camera sales across the board last year, thanks largely to e.g. smart-phones (which reflects the trend to ease-of-use and technical non-commitment of the average owner - i.e. most cameras have become overkill).
[Personally, I haven't bought gear (let alone new gear) since 2009, nor do I see an urgent need to re-evaluate that.]
