Some time ago I purchased LR3 and just recently installed it on my computer. I am using LR3 because my computer has XP and the newer versions want work. When I click on the LR shortcut I get the screen view I have attached. I do not know where to go from here. I tried contacting Adobe but as all of you know this is a nightmare. It is a shame that such good products have such lousy tech service. I am hoping that someone on UHH will come to my rescue. All I want LR for is organization.

Did you try any of the options at the bottom?

I had clicked on them but did not know what to do with what I saw. I did this again by clicking on the create button. Went to a file in my pictures folder clicked on it and hit save. The LR screen opened. I think I can do something with it now. Thanks so very much for your help. No where in anything I had read said anything about doing this. Maybe this happened because I have PSE 9 and CS6 already on the computer. Hope you don't mind if I contact you if I have another question. Thanks again. UHH members always come to the rescue.

When you start LR up for the first time you have the option of either creating a new catalog file (the file that keeps track of all of your edits to your images) or using an existing one.

If you have a catalog file that you've been using then click "use a catalog file" or just go ahead and click "create a new catalog file".

Either way won't hurt anything at all.

You won't mess anything up.

PS: if you just want to organize your pictures there are a lot of programs that will do it besides LR and they are free.

I urge you to use it for more than just organization...it's a "digital darkroom" and very very useful.

The first reply I got back from Aldebaran ask about the buttons at the bottom. I had already clicked on them but was not sure what to do. I clicked on create a new catalog just clicked on a file folder told it to save and LR opened. This was sort of guess work on my part at the time and then got back on and saw your response and knew I was going about it correctly. I had Scott Kelby's book on LR3 and had taken the tutorial on Adobe but neither said anything about this. Thanks to the UHH team I got my answer. Guess most think this was something any one should know, but I sure didn't. At 70 I am not the most tech savy guy out there.

Thanks again to all UHH members.

There are quite a few Lightroom tutorials in the PP section, although most were written with LR4 in mind, they are also relevant to LR3.

Best advice - upgrade your system - 4 core i7, 16 to 32 gb ram, at least 2 hard drives - and get LR 5. You won't regret it.

XP is no longer supported - therefore MS will no longer issue security updates - dangerous at best, frustrating regardless. It's kinda like driving a car with square wheels - a pretty bumpy ride.

I agree with Gene51. I tried to upgrade from XP to Win7 and there was no 32 bit version available. Only 64 and my computer wouldn't take it.

I've given it to my great Nephew. He can have some fun with it.

I agree with you and would love to update. When on a fixed income sometimes you have to take chances and not use the best products available. Sort of like having hamburger helper instead of rib-eye steak for dinner. I will deal with this as I always do and save my pennies until I can upgrade without having to do without necessities. Would love to be able to get a good price for the 30 to 40 thousand dollars worth of cameras I have left over from when I was in business.

Ya, Adobe/LR/PS support by "chat" is absolutely worthless, tedious and frustrating. Maybe if this forum and other mediums make enough noise we can get some action. Otherwise, when I hit walls like this I go to google and enter a search string like "LR3 how to select a catalogue" or "LR3 how to create a catalogue" or "LR3 catalogue," etc, etc, etc. The variety of sources that pop up give me tons of different approaches to try, and there is always one that will appeal to my understanding and preference.

Use Google and just enter 'how do you use LR3' or 'help with LR3. You should get a long list of sites. Good luck!

Thanks everyone with all the help I have gotten on UHH I now have it up and running. UHH has always come to my rescue. The depth of information and help here has made me better in photography and processing. Often I get an answer to a question before I am aware I am going to have a question.
Thanks again everyone.

Giugly01,

Just a suggestion but if you have 30-40 Thousand dollars of equipment laying around there may indeed be value in it. How about listing it on the UHH site and there may be a number of members interested. It may give you enough cash to upgrade your computer system a couple of times.

What you really mean is "30 to 40 thousand dollars it cost me for the cameras I have left over"

I carry a couple of older, high-end bodies, several lenses, a speedlite and various accessories. When the entire bag got stolen, I had to inventory and price out the contents. It came to about $5k that I paid, but it's now 'worth' about $2500. And I'd bought everything used to begin with.

So, unless you have some collectible pieces, you probably have a very few thousands of dollars 'worth' of cameras to sell.
