Of course Don, my bad!

On my D3100, flash mode is TTL

On my SB-700, selector dial is on remote, and in the menu the remote option is set on SU-4. Then the sliding selector on the left of the LCD screen is on TTL.

A long as my flash on the camera goes off, so does the SB7...

Is the SB 700 being controled by the camera- adjusting the exposure automatically?

From Imaging Resource:
You can still use the Nikon D3100 to control multiple remote flash units via either an SB-800 or SB-900 flash strobe or Nikon's SU-800 remote commander, but the built-in flash doesn't have that ability on its own.

Just a guess, but since the 5100 and 800/900 are higher level products than the 3100 and 700- I'm betting they will. Try it, if u can of course, and let us know.
