Can anyone confirm/deny that using Nikon's SG-31R IR Panel with my D3100 will trigger my SB-700 in Slave mode? I have been asking around and am getting mixed answers, but not from anyone who has physically tried it.

thanks,
skrach

I don't know what a SG-31R is. But I have a D5100 and the SB 700 and can confirm that the built in flash triggers the SB 700 in full iTTL slave mode using very fast visible light flashes.

You may be able to get the SB 700 manual on the Nikon WEB site. I assume you have the D3100 manual.

You can download the manual from Nikon USA site:http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17039/~/user's-manual---nikon-sb-700-speedlight

I have the 3100 and a SB700 and I can tell you there is NO built in Commander for off-camera flash triggering. That's probably the only downfall of the camera, because the two components work great together(as I'm sure you already know.)
I'd check a few camera stores and maybe Nikon for "compatability"
Here's a link to Amazon it got good reviews, but said nothing about using it on the 3100. It's only $12.00. Heck I'd give it a try and if you don't like it, return it. It is supplied by Adorama, a good outfit.
Let me know how you make out. Good Luck

SG-31R IR Panel for Built-In Flash:

Attaches to camera flash shoe and covers the camera’s built-in flash to prevent it from influencing the exposure. It's is a passive device. It is for use when the built-in flash of a camera is used as a Commander to fire Speedlights wirelessly. The D3100 does not offer a remote trigger as "Nikon DonB" states above.

Taken from Nikon Site:

"The D3100 doesn't have a commander mode feature. If you are using third party products please get in contact with them for compatibility with our products.

Your option's are Pocket Wizards, Perhaps the Nikon SU-800 ($250+) although I can't find confirmation although D3100 is supposed to support Nikon CLS functionality. Another cost effective option that I have heard works well is here: http://www.amazon.com/Yongnuo-Wireless-Trigger-Shutter-Tranceiver/dp/B004YW79F4 or try this: http://showingfoto.en.alibaba.com/product/504485504-212904044/Knight_Wireless_TTL_flash_trigger_for_Nikon_D3100_D700_flash_remote_with_TTL_Sync_up_to_1_8000s.html

I also believe that if you can find an old Nikon SB-30 Flash that it will trigger the Nikon SB-700. On ebay for around $ 120 used

So I came home today, and busted everything out and got to playing. Guess what- I was able to trigger my sb-700 with my D3100. It appears to work based on an optical trigger, & took some tweaking with the settings, so line of site or reflection off a wall or ceiling is needed, but it worked. To say i'm pretty pumped is an understatement.

Now off to play with my xmas gift sb-700 & see what all I come up with. I've always shot with natural light until now, so this opens a lot of new doors.

I probably don't get something on the terminology here. Or maybe the D3100 differs from the D5100 on this.

Anyhow the pic is from the D5100 manual.

I also have used my SB 700 off camera firing it with the camera's flash. I believe Nikon calls that wireless.

The manual also mentions an adapter to run a wire from the flash socket to flashes off camera.

See my response above. The D3100 is different than the D5100. Again per the Nikon Website:

Larry and skrach, If you have a method that can make the SB700 flash fire wirelessly off the D3100/D5100 cameras without a pocketwizard, the SG-31R or similiar device, I'd appreciate letting me know how you are doing it and what settings you Tweaked. Thanks

Of course Don, my bad!

On my D3100, flash mode is TTL

On my SB-700, selector dial is on remote, and in the menu the remote option is set on SU-4. Then the sliding selector on the left of the LCD screen is on TTL.

A long as my flash on the camera goes off, so does the SB7...

I hope that makes , if not let me know

BTW, I am not surprised you found disinformation on the Nikon WEB site. I find more and more such stuff in the information on complex technical products. Sometimes their training of the people they let to the communication isn't all there.

I also sometimes find it takes some real digging to understand their terminology. I had found a lot of people confused over Nikon's use of the term "wireless". They (this includes me) thought it meant using the camera's infared sensor or a radio signal. To Nikon it also means using the very fast relatively low intensity flashes of light to communicate iTTL through the built-in flash. At least that is the impression I have at present.
