:(

Guys, please don't get upset... but when you get ready for a new body, check out Sony full-frames.

They don't have these problems and if you SHOULD happen to get a lemon, customer service WILL take good care of you.

Thanks for the suggestion, CHOLLY. One of my favorite local portrait photographers has made the switch and he's thrilled with with the equipment, the weight and the photos.

^^^They make great products.

I know that doesn't help you in THIS situation... but if you ever decide to change systems, give Sony a good look. You won't be disappointed.

I was curious as to who makes the D600's sensor -- it's Sony.

Nikon DonB, if it has been less than 6 months since you sent it in last, that work is still under warranty. They warranty all work for 6 months.

Thanks 346pack. It's been longer than that. I've been cleaning the sensor myself. Love your avatar. I had a 1972 340 6pack Challenger back "in the day."

Yep... THAT means you KNOW what the image quality will be like. ;)

With a Sony body though, you won't get oil from the shutter mechanism on the sensor and if you do, Sony will either fix it or swap out the camera for you. Worst case, you'll get a credit towards the purchase of a replacement model which is great for really old, way-out-of-warranty gear.

Last Monday, I spent $50 to send my D600 (bought in December of 2012), insured via UPS, to Nikon in California. Yesterday, Nikon sent a letter saying there would be no charge for correcting the "dust" problem.

Today, I received this notice saying that if an out-of-warranty D600 is experiencing "dust" problems, they'll pay for shipping and repairs. Here's the letter:

Thank you for choosing Nikon for your photography needs.

Nikon Inc. is contacting you regarding your D600 D-SLR camera. As you may be aware, Nikon Inc. recently issued a Technical Service Advisory for Users of the Nikon D600 D-SLR camera.

This Advisory related that some users of Nikon’s D600 D-SLR camera have reported the appearance of tiny spots on certain of their images. Not all users have experienced this issue. Nikon has thoroughly evaluated these reports and has determined that these spots are caused by dust particles which may become visible when the camera is used in certain circumstances and/or with certain settings. It is a well-known fact that the presence of dust particles cannot be completely avoided when using a D-SLR camera even after normal sensor cleaning procedures, because of a number of factors including components moving at high speeds when images are taken, the use of interchangeable lenses and the different environments in which a D-SLR camera may be used. As part of its customer-service commitment, Nikon is providing a customer-service measure to reduce the potential impact of dust particles on images taken by its D600 D-SLR cameras.

Nikon has resolved this by making available to you (even if Nikon’s product warranty has expired) this customer-service measure, which includes the inspection, cleaning and replacement of the shutter assembly and related parts of your camera, FREE OF CHARGE as well as the cost of shipping your D600 camera to Nikon and its return to you. Once again, please understand that regardless of this service, your D600 camera as is the case with all D-SLR cameras, will continue to require normal periodic sensor cleanings.
To have your D600 serviced free of charge:

Click on the Schedule Free Repair Service link below.
On the following pages, you will need to provide the serial number of your D600 camera and your contact information.
Next, you will be prompted to create and print your Pre-paid UPS Return label and packing slip.
In shipping, please secure the D600 camera in a plastic bag inside the shipping box with several inches of quality packing material on all sides of the D600 camera. Please send your D600 camera and packing slip only. Do not include any batteries, memory cards or other accessories. Please do not ship in the original display box (It will not be returned).
Drop the shipping box off at any UPS facility. (Visit https://www.ups.com/dropoff for hours and locations.) You may also arrange to have your shipment collected by a UPS driver.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused. Nikon remains committed to providing only the highest quality cameras and components, and we hope that you will continue to choose Nikon for your photography needs.

My D600 came back from Nikon, California, 30 minutes ago and I've just finished resetting my favorite settings. I took one photo in the house and one photo of the cloudy sky set at f22 -- and, zoomed in, you'll see there's a faded spot, top right ... and it still looks darker on the perimeter. Either it wasn't thoroughly cleaned or the problem hasn't been fixed. They did the Service Repair Rank B2, which includes the shutter replacement, no charge.

I'll let you know whether the oil plague continues. Here's the photo of the gray sky.

Hi mormorazzi, I'd be interested to know how it works out with your D600. Please keep us posted. I've been considering sending mine in for service too. The sensor still gets dirty often. Thanks, Don
