I received my camera on Monday. Delayed Xmas present.

I haven't put it down since then except to sleep.

I like live view for precise focusing and I like the ability to tweek the focus of the lenses. My Tokina 28-70mm focused short.

When the weather gets warmer I am going to shoot real shots

It's 8:48am and almost 80 degrees here in Southern California. I love shoveling sunshine.

I have used the 5D III since it was first available. It has been nothing short of pure joy whether in photo or video mode. I bought the Canon EOS 5D III Digital Field Guide by Charlotte K. Lowrie and continue to refer to it to keep myself moving along with its features. If reading is one of your vices, combine these two... the next accomplishment is just around the corner.

You also mention tweaking the focus of certain lenses. Front and back focus issues can affect the digitial outcome as you surely know. Keep in mind that if you add a 1.4x extender to a certain lens capable of using a extender, you need to tweek that extender/lens combination too. From that point on, the 5DIII will recognize that tweek as well. Most of all, the 5D3 will keep you smiling.

I bought the Lowrie book before I got the camera. For the $3,500 or $$$ I wanted to make damn sure what functions were or were not there.

I kind of like the in camera HDR function even though it only uses 3 photo's. A poor man's HDR but gives you a peek into contrasty light.

Yes, and fire season is upon us now. It's very dry here and we really need water.

I don't know how you will be able to wait. The 5D MKIII is my favorite camera for the difficult shots. Try in-camera HDR and Multiple Exposures while you're at it.

I'm not a big fan of the camera's in camera HDR images. However I shoot RAW+JPEG so I take the RAW images the camera used to produce it's HDR image and process them in other HDR software. Can't beat it when you are on the go without a tripod but want to attempt some hand held HDR. I've had mixed results mostly because sometimes I'm in to big a hurry and get to much camera shake. But it does make taking multiple exposure images easy as long as you don't want more than three. If I want more than three I use AEB and a tripod.

The only thing I did not like at first was the lock on the mode dial, but I got past that real quick

One day I was out with my 7D set in aperture mode and was shooting away. I don't usually check the display after each image once I've set it up and looked at the first few to make sure they are turning out as expected. Then about 15 or 20 shots later I looked down at the image and it was terrible. At first I couldn't figure out what had happened but then I checked my mode dial and it had somehow moved to M. Of course it was me but I have no idea how I did it. Ruined about 10 shots. Sooo I like that feature of my 5DMKiii and I also now check my display more often.

Now I have to decide which "L" lens to purchase next. The 24-105 I have is a great walk around lens. And the 100 f/2.8 macro is great for macro and other stuff as well. I have a Tamron 70-300 which while inexpensive does a decent job on the camera but I had a lot of experience with it on my prior camera and learned how to work within it's limitations.

Does the Auto light optimizer affect the raw file other then adjust the camera settings to push the exposure to the right without over exposing.

I have that on the 70D and have been playing with it a bit recently.

I like the lock feature as well. Unless you change modes a lot it seems more a benefit to me.

Does the mark 3 allow you to create a Raw image with the HDR feature? The 70D will only shoot HDR in jpg if I remember correctly. I just started to shoot RAW because I can save the files for editing when I get more experience with that.

The 5D MK III will create RAW images of the 3 photos used in the HDR process. The final in camera HDR image is saved in JPG format. One of the differences between the 6D and the 5D MK III is the 5D has more options available when creating in camera HDR photos. On the 6D only the final HDR photo will be saved. To set the 6D to HDR mode, to have to set the camera to JPEG or the HDR mode is grayed out. The 5D MK III also has 5 different effect settings for HDR (Natural, Art Standard, Art Vivid, Art Bold, and Art Embossed) and the 6D does not these effect settings.

Gary - since you already have a Tamron lens, suggest you look seriously at the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC lens, the only one in its class with stabilisation. I use it as my regular lens on the 5DIII and it produces superb images. Good luck.
