This is a gorgeous bird, even on bad hair days! I am content with my camera equipment most days, but just this once did I ever hanker for one of those monster L lenses nearly as long as I am tall! I was pushing the limits of my Panasonic GH3 with my longest lens, 100-300mm (equivalent to full frame 300-600mm). Except for the last one, these suffered severe cropping. Post-processing advice is most welcome.

The Reddish Egret is the rarest wading bird in the U.S., and is a highly specialized feeder ecologically restricted to a very narrow coastal habitat that is vulnerable to human impacts. The Florida population is estimated to be 350-400 pairs. (Information from the Avian Research and Conservation Institute) I guess Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge must be one of their favorite places!

And I don't think you will ever catch a Reddish Egret as far north as Alaska! Thank you for looking and for your kind words about my nemesis - post-processing!

Fantastic images,Kerfree! The colors are just exceptional and compositions are wonderful. And I am so glad you posted the narrative, so educational, and informative. Otherwise I'd have been alarmed that you caught me just out of the shower this a.m. Must be my twin living in Florida (she has the better looking legs).
