It should have came with your camera software.

Pappy

Mine came with the camera in the box. Unfortunately it was so far out of date that it would not run on an Intel processor! Software is only good when updated to run on modern computers. I don't need software that runs better on an Osborne I than on my oldest (10+ year old Windows laptop with Intel Processor). That's why I returned the new 2011 model camera and hesitate to buy another of that brand!

A lot of processing needs to happen to go from the sensor data when you take the exposure to an image ready for display. The camera will do this, based on settings you specify, and give you a jpeg image file. Basically every piece of software that can display an image can use a jpeg file. Many photographer do not want the camera to do the processing for them, they want to do it using software on their computer, so they take the sensor data and work with that. That sensor data is called a raw file. Warrior is asking about software which will open the raw file and allow him to do the "post processing" he wants to do, so he gets the final image he wants for display.

My Canon's all come with RAW Conversion software. I also use Lightroom 5.3 for finishing my photo's. I never used RAW in the beginning but now I realize that I have much more flexibility, and only shoot this way.

One of the pains is needing a raw converter.

Can your camera shoot RAW+JEPG?

The "url" tag is very nice for long URLs, it does not display the url which is probably not useful to read, and it does not make the page very wide when viewing. Do "Quote Reply" to see what got typed:

my Canon can shoot both JPEG & RAW. Sometimes I do this when I am out walking around. Use both at the same time. I have 2 bodies, a 60D & 70D.

Thanks! Clear and to the point!

Just be aware that a raw pic straight out the camera will probably not look as good as a JPEG that has been processed in-camera. By the way, RAW is not an acronym, so there is no reason to use capitals. If it stood for Really Awesome Way (to take pictures), then caps would be okay.

Eagle Eye, I'm a beginner to digital, but took a semester in black & white film photography at a college near me some years ago. I loved doing the darkroom work and could easily spend four or five hours in there doing three photos!
With digital here's what I do now. I have a Mac and use iPhoto. I shoot in both Raw and jpeg, process the Raw to my liking and compare it when I'm finished to the jpeg. The Raw is always way, way better. Even after making some adjustments to the jpeg it is never even close.
I am using both for now as a learning process, comparing the two side by side in iPhoto. Processing Raw is satisfying and fun in the same way the film developing and darkroom was to me. Try using both side by side for a while, and the difference will show itself to you quickly.

That's an excellent way to see the difference. "A picture is worth..."

I am aware of this, that is why I push the raw through Lightroom, but it allows me for freedom for creating different looks.

Well I was replying to your comment. As I understand about raw, and the fact that it is not always usable until processed. I did not know about the use of raw in capitals. I have seen it both ways in magazines.

It's a very minor point, not worth arguing over.
