I'm very much a beginner. Could someone explain what Raw means and what difference it makes from the alternatives?

The main practical (as opposed to technical) difference, is that all those settings you need to do in camera, like white balance, contrast, colour saturation etc. can be done afterwards. There is also the advantage of being able to increase or decrease the exposure in just the shadows or highlights. So if you have a sceen where if you were shooting JPEGs, you would have to sacrifice one for the other, you have a better chance using RAW. If you have a screen on your camera that will show any burnt out highlights, I would suggest you use it and expose so that there aren't any, as dark areas can be corrected better than over blown highlights.

Its essentially what the name implies, the raw image without any camera processing except for your shot settings. What this gives you is a large file with much more range of control in PP and much more leverage in fixing problems with your shots.

It's been addressed at least a hundred times on this site. Search.

Two "C" issues say it all, and simply: Cwality and Convenience.

If you want to sell it, hang it over your fireplace or win a photo contest, go for the Cwality, and shoot raw.

If you want photos of the grandkids, the deer you saw on the way home from work, or vacation/travel snaps, go for Convenience, shoot jpegs.

Didn't the new camera come with new software? What format do you want to convert to?
