I'm not saying you should get the D800. I'm saying don't rule it out for the wrong reason.

BTW, that's more for CHOLLY and SS than for you, NYJoe. :-)

Amehta, I've hardly been on here for a couple of days, and this is the first thing I see. I can't even take a nap, without someone poking me in the ribs! No wonder my ears are on fire!

Amehta, Joe seems to be overly hung up on pixels. I'm a little surprised he has not seen that humungous PhaseOne 80mp tree standing in the big clearing over there. And those aren't those itty bitty noisy pixels like on the 800. No, those pixels are the size of silver dollars!
Joe is having trouble seeing the forest for the trees. I personally feel the mklll is a better camera for how I would use it. If Joe wants it ONLY for landscapes in GOOD light to make 30x45's, then the 800 would be better. BUT that's assuming he gets the top of the line Nikon lenses, or his advantage will probably go away.
I shoot everything with my cameras, including a lot of ambient low light and fast action, which is where the mklll takes over. And the ability to change my shooting situation by turning the custom settings dial on top is also a deal breaker. But for me, the ability to use the super fast glass that ONLY Canon produces, is the reason I went to Canon in the first place, but I realize, most will never shoot fast glass. And the focus system in the mklll is second only to the 1dx.
I'm NOT a fan boy, I have concrete reasons and can list them all.
If Joe is going to shoot only GOOD light landscape, and Grandkids, he should go with the Nikon. ;-)
But that's just my 2cents.

Since you are already into Canon, get the 5DIII which is very fast and has great image quality. Why fool around with adapting a Canon lens to a Sony body. You will lose a lot of speed and who knows what else in such a setup. The 5DIII is great to use and produces spectacular images. What more can you ask for? If you wait for the new body, you will get very tired.

These shots don't really convince me that the 5DMkIII is great, just that you know how to shoot portraits and get pretty women to pose for you, and those are much more important. ;-)

Antonio, he won't get tired. He'll get OLD!
Hey, all the good looking girls must be in LA. You're the only one that shoots'em. Everybody else just shoots Grandkids. What's up with that?! ;-)

There are certainly more in LA than in Boston. :-(

Both. But, in terms of the grandkids, the grandparents are usually in AZ.

Ok Sharpshooter....I'm already old and I don't have grandchildren. As to what I like to shoot...you can view my portfolio at www.josephsheedy.com. I want gear to suit as many kinds of photographs as I can. My smallest shots print out to 5x7 and my largest to 17x22. I want the ability to go big when I need to.....24x36 at least...and I want the option to do 50% crops if the need arises. I want my tools to serve my vision and I want my vision wide open to all creative possibilities. If I could afford a nice German medium format digital setup I would have it...but that's not likely so here I am trying to get a handle on what tools match my resources. To this end, I'm happy for the opportunity to have these discussions with helpful knowledgeable guys like yourself. If more megapixels help me achieve my goal...I want a them. If L series canon lenses help me achieve my goal...I want them too. (Just bought the 24-105 and will probably add the 50mm after a few more gallery sales.)

It suits me too, but I'm pondering a full size sensor camera anyway. I just can't get over the cost differential and relatively miniscule performance increase (with some) over my OMD-EM1. I don't shoot in a studio, I do shoot pretty girls (and they like my EM-1 rig!), and I don't ever enlarge over 20x30.
Anand has already weighed-in on this FF issue with me, and has marched me right up the ladder to wait for the D4X (just kidding with you, Anand)!

And Joe, if you're thinking about the 5DMk3, you might have done yourself a favor to pick up the 24-70 f2.8II L over the 24-105 f4 L. It's AWESOME on the 5D3, and eye-blisteringly sharp.

but rumors about that high meg canon seem to have been just around a number of corners over the past year.

Like the D400.
