Canon 5d mklll vs. Nikon d800e vs. Sony a7r revisited
Hi folks....I've made some progress deciding my next camera system. I purchased new Canon 24-105 lense and will also pick up a 50mm I go along. So I have eliminated the Nikon system in my array of choices and my new decision will choose between:
1. a current Canon 5d mklll body
2. Waiting for a possible redesign of, or higher megapixel replacement of, the 5d mklll.
3. Adapting my Canon 24-105 lense to a Sony a7r body (which I am
told uses the same 36 megapixel sensor as the Nikon d800e). Nervous about this as I have only heard that it's possible...not about the actual outcome.
4. Continue shooting with my old Canon 5d and give up the idea of producing up to 36x44 fine art prints without stitching.
Thoughts?
I don't think you're going to see a 5DMkIV for a couple of years. The 5DMkII came out in 2008, and the 5DMkIII in 2012. Meanwhile the pace of sensor improvements has slowed, not accelerated, so the time between major models should not speed up.
Anand,
That really helps. But what about the higher megapixel camera...they need to stay competitive with Nikon and Sony?

Looks like a new EOS 1 is around the corner, it will be at least 44.3MP, probably more (maybe even 75MP), but it'll cost you I'll bet (more pixels are not always better).

Perhaps, or they can say that 24mp is good enough, and the 36mp sensor is overkill. We think the companies always walk in lock-step, but sometimes they do deviate.
And if you want the 36mp camera, put the Nikon back on your list. ;-)
speters..... Maybe it's my impatience....but rumors about that high meg canon seem to have been just around a number of corners over the past year. I'm 63....let's get the show on the road, Canon!!
Well, Anand... I guess I crossed that bridge when I got the Canon 24-105 L series....thinking I could continue to use my current Canon 5d while waiting to see what comes out of the future.

Sure, that makes sense. If you switch to Nikon, you'd probably take a $300-400 hit. Of course, the D800 is $600 less than the 5DMkIII...
We need a new phrase: don't let the lens tail wag the dog. Usually it's with respect to EF-s/DX lenses. :-)
I don't think I'd try an adapt that lens to the sony.
Agreed....thanks, An and, for your valuable insight.

I'm not saying you should get the D800. I'm saying don't rule it out for the
wrong reason.
BTW, that's more for CHOLLY and SS than for you, NYJoe. :-)

my guess is that you're going to loose some AF speed (if it works at all)...this is purely a guess...but the moment you introduce an adaptor and a lens not specifically made for that format, somethings gotta give.
Yes...this is my concern, too...but its nice to hear it from another person before striking off the list.

I considered it...then I looked at the limited selection of lenses...and the prices. I then bought the EM1 and haven't looked back.
