As a member has already stated, check them out carefully. For what it is worth I ordered a Nikon D3200 camera from Hong Kong early this year at A$400.00 plus $40.00 freight and it arrived 3 days after ordering. Have ordered several other items and got the same good service. The company name is eGlobal, Hong Kong and I am crossing my fingers that you get the same good service.

I believe eGlobal only sell in Australia and the U.K. This is the company that I used and was a lot cheaper than DigitalRev in this instance. BTW, I would only buy lenses from abroad not cameras.

You may get a bill from customs I did. They wanted $27 So it was still a good deal from digirev.

I think that I would actually trust this vendor, I looked into them at one time and satisfied myself that they would take care of me if I were to encounter a problem with the products that they sell. I came to this conclusion after reading several independent reviews that did not come from their site or advertising... I read several where people had warranty problems that were handled to their satisfaction... something that most Hong Kong retailers are not well known for.

I hear a lot of people complain about jobs going overseas and people blame the companies. In reality it is a shared blame. The more we demand better service and buy from USA companies and stores the better the products and service will be. And the job you save may be your own.

I think the only downside is if it needs warranty service it needs to be shipped back to Hong Kong

Never had a problem with HK items so far, and I've gotten around 15 items from there. All arrived as described, and well within what was the shipping time listed. Hopefully this helps you out.

Just remember your warranty is no good here, you will have to return it to Hong Kong should you ever need service, at your expense, and you will have to add import and export duties which will all end up costing you a LOT more than the initial savings.

This is a very big concern for me and I respect your warning. One vendor, digitalrev.com, has an interesting warranty. Ship it back to them and they pay for it in both directions or submit a quote from someone here to them and they will pay to have it fixed here. The downside is that this is a one-year warranty and not three. I asked them if they offer an extended warranty.

I priced out service here and it will wipe out the savings from Hong Kong.

Too much to weigh here.

I am thinking of buying a lens from a merchant in Hong Kong using Amazon. For whatever it is worth, the merchant rating is very high. The US street price is $1,250 while the Hong Kong price with the input duty is $1,000. No shipping charge in either case. The Hong Kong product is new with all accessories and in the retail box. One-year warranty. The US warranty is three years.

What experience do people have with such sourcing?

My experience - with much lesser sums of money - is that the Chinese are very eager to please and customer satisfaction is that only 100% is good enough. It is a pity that many of our own vendors do not take customer satisfaction so highly.

As has been pointed out - the guarantee is from the vendor not the manufacturer.

But, when I looked at a lens recently, there were three dealers who offered the lens for £240 and a 1 year guarantee - whereas on EBay used lens were going for the same amount without any guarantee.
