Let's say a girl I know uses my old camera, to take photos at her parents 50 Anniversary ceremony. Who would be the proper copyright holder? Her, or one of her sisters using the camera, or me for having the images on my memory card.

Not that anything would come up over them, this is just a discussion with another person about copyrights, and how silly some get over them.

The copyright will be held by the individual that took the photos when the proof can be made evident.
Though you might still need to talk to an attorney to know for sure.

Technically, the one who TOOK the photo always gets the copyright.
The difficult part in your "borrowed" camera is the PROOF of who took the photo since the EXIF data with point to the owner of the camera!

A man pushes his wife off the 28th floor of a hotel. A woman on the 13th floor was shooting at her husband and missed. The bullet from the gun of the woman pierces the heart of the woman pushed from the 28th floor as she passes by.
The coroner rules that the woman was dead before she hit the ground.

Is the man that pushed the woman off the building guilty of murder?

Sorry...but I couldn't resist. If there is no case on the scenario a judge will rule.
That's why he's the judge. It's really easy to come up with hypotheticals.
My advice is go out and take some pictures.

This is the best answer so far. The person who actually took the photo is consider the creator and therefore the copyright holder, but as Wahawk said, if several people were using a borrowed camera, who can say who took what?

no but he could be charged with attempted murder if the judge was so inclined as he did attempt to commit a crime .

Yeah, it is silly, That's what I was trying to get across to this other lady about the copyrights. She is wanting me to enlarge/print some wedding photos, and I ask her if she had the copyrights to them. Should have just kept my mouth shut, and said my printer was broke, or something.

She's a snot, and I didn't care about her business anyway. All she has is a disc the 'photographer' gave her, might get a decent 8x10, but of course she's wanting poster size. Told her to go to Walmart.

Very good reply! Basically stay out of the potential situation!

Remove your memory card, send her to walmart or whatever to buy her own memory card , once she's finished remove memory card hand it to her take your camera and send her on her merry way.
Her card , her problem, collect 1 dollar from her for camera rental fee and go about your business .

In this situation, the person who took the pictures has the "copyright", but they can easily waive it. When I took pictures at my cousin's wedding last year, I have him jpegs, with the full understanding that he could print them if he wanted. When I shot a friend's wedding last month, I said I wanted to handle the printing. Figuring out which is which is not always easy. But since she's not a customer worth keeping, I agree with passing on the work.

The customer is not always right, but the customer needs to be satisfied. Sometimes by somebody else.

Michael, perhaps you could have told her that you would be happy to accommodate her and that all you would need would be the disc, a $1000 deposit placed in a fiduciary account and, oh, one last minor item, a release of all copyright restrictions held by the original photographer - notarized! Release of the fiduciary funds would also have to be authorized at the discretion of the original copyright holder, said release to be also duly notarized. And, of course, since Time Is Of the Essence, said releases must be delivered to you within thirty days of the date of first contact, failure of such timely delivery resulting in the automatic release of the fiduciary funds to you without further obligation on your part (such as - shall we say - the SAFE return of the original disc.) Merely a simple business agreement - notarized!
