The T3i is an excellent camera for what you describe and especially becuz of its size. It is light, small and not a burder to carry around. To upgrade you might consider the 70 D for just over $1K. Its new focus system is outstanding for stills and vid and it is only slightly larger than the T3i. The 7D is also good for under a thou but it is big and heavy compared to the T3i.

yes, it is a good little camera. I have Nikon, my daughter in law has the T3i. I have used and like both. The main thing is to KNOW your camera and its capabilities.
