if $1000 is the budget, I would think that you could do much better than a T3i.

What lens range are you looking at.

The t3i is sufficient There is a deal with an 18-135mm lens for $679 right now or you could jump to the t5i for a little more money and a little less lens (18-55) at $699.

I would most likely go with 250 lens range

Welcome Robocop. The T3i is a great camera. Seems like you are just starting out in this great adventure! Just go to the top of the page and dive into the search function. There is an amazing amount of information for you to look at. You might find that a super zoom will suit your needs. Or maybe several lenses will cover what you want to,photograph. One thing about the modern dslr is the available accessories. You can't go wrong with the Canon you are asking about. Just don't go cheap on the glass.

Good luck!

Rick

You could probably find a used D7100 (open box return this time of year) for around 800-850. Then you'd need to locate a used lens as well.

You should be able to pick up a useable (but not great) 70-300 and a t3i or t5i w/kit lens for under $1000 or a hair over.

Obviously there are aways more choices. The t3i is already 2 generations old. I would suggest that you go to a big box store and check the various camera models out for both ergonomics (how they feel in your hand) and especially the menu. You can also go to the Canon website and look for their refurbished cameras since they now all come with a 1 year guarantee. You also have to decide whether your going to want to shoot video with it once in a while. Last your going to have to choose the lens you want to purchase with it. This is a great time to do it since I heard that retail sales were way off.

You might take a look at the 60D, they have been on sale recently and personally I think that the controls are easier to use than those on the T series.

A used 7D will come in under $1000 and will help with sports more than the other cameras suggested. Does your budget include lenses? The 60D is another good option although it won't shoot as fast a frames / sec as the 7D.
