Aug 29 2005, my wife and I took an Alaska cruise. She used a d70 with a 18-70 and a 70-300 non vr. I used a Fuji s2 with a budget lens. We got great shots we still have framed and hanging. You don't need the latest and greatest to get great shots. Just remember to use good technique and enjoy your trip.

Thanks very much. Doesn't canon make a 50mm 1.4?

Yes, either one is excellent, and Haydon is right, it's $100 off at B&H right now (you have to add it to your shopping cart to get the lowest price. That seems to be standard operating procedure for some of the discounts these days. Both will work very well for any low light photography, as well as shots where you want to isolate the subject and throw the background out of focus.

I'm not sure you really need a new lens. What do you feel is lacking or limiting your photography? There are advantages to traveling light. :-)
Definitely! Lugging camera equipment and changing lenses can take the joy out of a trip. Traveling for enjoyment vs going on a paid photo shoot are two different experiences. When possible, I like to carry two cameras - tele on one and wide angle on the other.

I can tell you from painful experience that carrying a body and 3 lenses ++ around on your shoulder for 19 days is no fun. For my travels I have reduced the bag to one lens, the Sony Zeiss 16-80 (24-120 35mm Equivalent). It is not a fast lens so I have to jack up the ISO on occasion and it is not a particularly long lens so birds and other long zoom subjects are out. But, it gives me true wide angle to medium tele shots and I find that to be OK for 98% of my travel pictures.
Definitely buy a 1.2, 1.4 or 1.8 aperture. Think in the 35mm to 50mm range. Amazing all-purpose lens with great low-light capabilities. Remember, you will be shooting all day, some at sunrise, some at dusk and some at night.
I know you asked about a prime, but have you looked at the Sigma 18-35 1.8. The 1.8 is constant through the whole range. It replaces a whole group of primes. I got it recently and love it.
The effective range is 29-56 on a canon APS-C sensor like yours.

Need info on a new lens as a prime
I currently have 18. 55 mm , 70 300 mm and 100 mm 3.5
Looking at 25 105 mm.???
Please help

I wouldn't bother with another prime, the 18-55mm and the 70-300mm should be more than adequate, so why be burdened with more lens than you need on the trip?
If you have a second camera that will accommodate both of those lens be sure to bring that and you won't need to be continually swapping out the lenses.
