Do you want to pay $600 for 100mm ? and, do you want to carry the extra weight and bulk of the Sigma ? How much do you value fast and accurate focusing in lower light ?

The photos at the following link were taken with the Sigma 150-500. Most were handheld. The image stabilization works great.
The lens is heavy but I was able to manage it several hours at a time. If you can, shoot at f8 or a smaller aperture. The images were taken with Nikon D600 and D7000. I am very pleased with my purchase.

You might hold off for a little bit. Tamron is coming out with a 150-600mm lens and it is suppose to be about $1069.00. I think it is due in February....Rich

I have a Sigma 150 - 500 which I am pleased with. I too had previously owned Sigma lenses that I was less than happy with, but this one has bought me back to the Sigma fold. So much so that I have bought their 150mm macro, and 12 - 24mm in the last 6 months, and plan to get the 85mm 1.4 after the holiday.
It has been mentioned that there seem to be a lot of the 150 - 500's for sale s/h. I would suggest that this is a large lens, and takes a bit of getting used to. My first shots were terrible, so give it a bit of time. The OS works well, and the bulk of my shots with this lens are hand held. The only time it goes on a tripod is when I'm covering a bird feeding station, and that is only because it is a convenient place to park it for what could be hours at a time. It's no lightweight. A good quality lens, for a good price. It has to be a serious contender in this size of lens, particularly if you need to be budget wary.

Sigmas counter to the Tamron will be the new "Art" version which will be compatible with their USB dock for programming and fine tuning at your home computer just like their 120-300mm F2.8 Sport S lens does now.

Sigma's glass has been greatly improved in the last two years, so much so, that some of their lenses have been compared to some Canon "L" quality lenses. I use to buy only "L" lenses but now own three Sigma lenses and am very happy with them. As for Sigma vs Tamron, I will take Sigma's quality over Tamron anytime.

I owe MT for bringing the changes Sigma has made to my attention, Thank you MT!

I'm using the Nikon 80-400 with a 1.4x TC with very good results. Even on a cloudy day. The lens has VR. Very careful handheld is also working.

Thankfully D800 is great at ISO 3200

There is a big difference between a 1.4X TC and a 2X TC! I use a 1.4X on many of my lenses with good luck, normally with little lose of IQ. When I go to a 2X TC I expect and get a fair amount of lose of quality in the photos. This seams to be the case most of the time. This photo was taken using a Sigma dedicated 2X TC on a Sigma 120-300mm lens.

You should keep in mind it is recommended to use the same manufacture TC as the lens when ever possible. I have heard this many times and have often questioned it but have tested this lens with a Tamron 2X, a Kenko 2X and a Sigma 2X and the Sigma does work best. Matching manufactures does not seam as critical with a 1.4X TC though.

I would like some added range for my Nikon. I have the 2.8 Nikon 70-200mm. If I purchase the TC-20E III AF-1 teleconverter for the lens it goes to 400 mm. I can also buy the Sigma 150-500mm lens that many here say is very good for the money. The difference here in Canada between the lens and the teleconverter is about $600. What do people here think might be the best way to go?
Thanks
Ron

Next year Tamron is coming out with a 150-600mm f5.0-f6.3 zoom. Initially, it will be offered in the Canon EF mount for FF & APS-C formats. Mounts for Nikon & Sony are supposed to follow. Price is this time is listed at $1069.00

Depending on your time frame of when you need the lens, and your actual budget. The new Tamron 150-600mm f5.0/6.3 with VC is reported to go on sale in the US in mid January at a price point of $1069.00. I'm assuming to go up against the "big Sig".

I like the 1.4X TC on the 70-200mm F2.8 lenses, but try to avoid the 2X on anything. The loss of 2 stops of light usually makes the lens as slow as longer, less expensive options. 70-200 F2.8 + 2X TC = 140-400mm F5.6, not exactly a light grabber) In this instance you would be much happier with the Sigma than a 2X TC on the 70-200.

MT. Will you be trying one of the new Tamron lens against the Big Sig ? An informed opinion of yours in the not to distant future would I guess be welcomed by most hogs.
Best wishes for the festive season. washy

Where did you get this information? This sounds like a very good price.
