No such thing as a D400. The 70D is equivalent to the D5200, and the 7D is roughly equivalent to the D7000. If Canon comes out with a 7D MK II this next spring it will be roughly equivalent to the D7100.
I've said this before, but I know of no one who that has converted from Nikon to Canon, but many (including myself) who have converted from Canon to Nikon. I think the D7100 in exquisite camera
Or get the best of all worlds with a Sony A7. Full Frame and with the proper adapters use Canon, Nikon, Sony, Leitz, zeiss glass. ;)
No, but if you have an investment in Cannon lenses, that could be a problem. If you don't have several Cannon lenses then there isn't a big problem.
Other than that, you would love the D7100.
Look, it's the skill of the photographer that matters. Cannon makes some excellent products and so does Nikon. The D7100 test out at the 17th best sensor according to DXO Marks. First Cannon is 24th. For lenses, tests are done on specific and multiple bodies. First Cannon combo is 56th, behind 16+ Nikon tests. Cannon does video better than Nikon and marketing better. Nikon got behind because they were on top of the film world and reluctant to leave for digital. Cannon got a head start and they make very good gear, but I've been a Nikon shooter since rangefinder days and I have never had a bad camera or lens. Now I shoot multiple D4's and a D800E. At challenging venues, I can produce shots of a quality that cannot be matched for iso, low noise and focusing ability.
But the best advice is to buy what feels good to you. Either one will not restrict your ability to produce remarkable images. It's up to you.

But, there is a reason why Canon sells almost more DSLR cameras, than every other manufacturer combined.
And contrary to the belief of some, it's got nothing to do with marketing.
Have fun with your new camera. ;-)

The reason is that "There's one born every minute"
Just joking, Canon aren't bad.

If you are going to compare the two brands, at least SPELL CANON CORRECTLY! A cannon goes BOOM! Just my 2 cents. Cheers.
Before you spend money decide if you want to go FULL frame or CROP frame. Most will disagree with me on this, but I view Canon verses Nikon as a Ford vs Chevy debate. Both are industry leaders. Both make good, mainline equipment. Deciding this Canon vs that Nikon comes down to what you want, what you are going to shoot, what lenses, if any you currently have, etc., etc.
I am a Nikon guy myself, so I know its product line better. If I were going out to spend money today on a Nikon camera, it would be a refurbished, D600. If I wanted to spend less money, and keep my stable of Nikon crop frame lenses, I would buy a D7000 as you can get these NEW for cheap. The deal of the CENTURY was Best Buy has the D7000 with the 18-140 lens for $799 on Black Friday. Almost jumped on that! If I was going to switch brands, it would definitely be to a FULL frame camera and I would go with either a Canon 6D or a Sony A7. Determine your budget first. Don't be afraid of refurbished and then enjoy then hunt!
I always chuckle at those individuals debating the merits of Canon versus Nikon. Both manufacturers make excellent cameras and, to be candid, it's not the equipment that makes the picture. It's the photographer.
In my 50 plus years as a photograher, including service as a Navy photographer and 15 years managing retail photo stores, I've used and sold a myriad of Canon and Nikon cameras. The differences are small and insignificant. Until recently, Canon had faster autofocus and Nikon had superior metering and overall image quality. But, we are talking about INSIGNIFICANT differences.
We choose one brand over another based on opinion and perceptions, rarely on actual performance based factors. What works for one photographer won't necessarily work for another.
As to Canon sellng more cameras than all other manufactuers, keep in mind Canon is a huge company with a giant marketing presence. They make many more products than cameras. Nikon has always been an optics specialist, producing binoculars and other precision optics long before Canon was on the scene. Nikon was always a smaller company that was comfortable carving out a niche dedicated to a speciality market.
Bottom line is debating Canon versus Nikon is silly.

The Canon crowds have been in denial about Nikon products for a few years now, starting with the D90 and continuing through today. Mostly sensor envy.
MT,
Something I find interesting is that a lot of Nikon fans dislike Sonys & yet Sony makes the sensors for Nikon.
Go figure!

Where do you get the idea Nikon users dislike Sony? Sony makes some very fine cameras, but I myself do not like their viewfinder system. Sony also makes most of Pentax's sensors. The K5 actually has the exact same sensor as the D7000.
Sony makes almost 50% of Nikons sensors, this is true. Nikon actually makes several of their own and the D5200, D5300 and D7100 use sensors from Toshiba.

I've read comments to that effect numerous times on this forum. Personally, I love Sonys. I have three of them (RX 1, RX-100II & NEX-7). I think they take EXCELLENT images especially when coupled with Zeiss optics.

And they are all fine cameras within their limitations. Many people are not interested in the EVIL series cameras and that shows in the extremely low market share they hold, amongst all the brands available. But there is a market for them and those that want them are usually quite satisfied with their results. Fuji makes a very nice competitive line and I rate both quite equal in image quality.
And the question was should Teddy buy Nikon D7100 or not.
Go for it Teddy. I am trying to sell everything I can (Nikon AND Canon DSLR bodies I have) in order to buy the new D7100
It is fabulous camera, it will work with all Nikon lenses made since 1959, and will focus with ALL auto-focus lenses from Nikon.
