If your alignment is correct (I think it is), then Canons are several hundred dollars more than the corresponding Nikon. That would be a mark against SharpShooter's placement of Canon significantly ahead of Nikon.

The Canon crowds have been in denial about Nikon products for a few years now, starting with the D90 and continuing through today. Mostly sensor envy.

They couldn't stand that Nikon had the first DSLR with video, even though Canon put much more emphasis on video than Nikon. I think the sensor envy started a year earlier with the D3/D300.

MT and Amehta, you can keep your Sony sensors, no envy here. When it comes to beginners and amateurs, who cares what sensor or body you even use? Go with Pentax !
When it comes to pros and semi-pros, it's all about the glass. There will be a new body tomorrow.
Pros need an edge over the competition, so they shoot with lenses like 35 1.4 or 50 1.2 or 85 1.2 or 200 1.8 or 6 pound 500's and on and on. Ever wonder why Nikon lost all it's market share to Canon. I know, I hear it all the time, cause Canon is a marketing machine. What, Nikon is stupid?
I just gave you 5 reasons, and there are a lot more that those, including the bodies. I'll let you guys figure out why Nikon can't produce those lenses, but I'm sure you already know.
I don't expect anybody to jump ship, but if you have aspirations of ever being a pro, pick carefully. If you are just starting out, choose even more carefully, cause NOBODY else has that glass. And until Nikon can start to produce them, it just falls farther and farther behind every year. Canon has sold more DSLR's than Nikon for the last 11years in a row for the reasons that I mentioned, among others.
I wonder why? Oh yea, marketing, I forgot.

Just a couple facts I've noticed: Canon has abandoned legacy Canon shooters with different lens mounts that don't fit on current DSLRs. Nikon has accomodated their legacy lens holders with lens mounts that fit on today's DSLRs.
Nikon makes downright crappy entry-level (compact/ instant/ point-and-shoot) cameras, Canon's are actually pretty/ very good. Doesn't Nikon care about its name in that genre of camera?
Nikon was originally GIVEN to photojournalists for use here in the USA after WWII, and that's how/why that name is in white on top of the black pentaprism... and black against a silver pentaprism... so that other consumers could see it. Both Canon and Nikon make great glass.

Come on folks, let's not have yet ANOTHER Canon vs Nikon pissing contest. There are sites out there that do that using technical data and not just personal bias.

Even as you look at the strengths and weaknesses, a weakness in one may be a feature you would never use. The same with lens'.

Teddy - this discussion has moved beyond your original question. I'm in the consensus that you'll be happy with the D7100. But, I remain concerned about the need to purchase new lenses and / or sell off Canon related equipment you still have, if any. I'd add an additional caveat regarding the advancement in complexity of the D7100 model vs the Rebel line. I was a bit put off by the learning curve in making the change from a Rebel XTi to a 7D. You'll also have to learn a new camera menu and physical layout where the same controls are not in the same places ...

Regarding the Nikon vs Canon debate this post has renewed, let's look a bit deeper into two details brought up in the discussion so far: pros on the NFL sidelines all have white lenses and Canon gave up on their legacy owners (the FD mount vs EF). I can't find where I was reading about the Canon decision made in late 80s, but the analysis was that Canon made the right decision to move to a system that supports all electronic auto focus as compared to the horse n buggy era of the manual focus FD lenses. I had a camera from that era with two FD lenses that left me on an island of forgotten technology. I didn't embrace digital and fell out of photography as film went out of vogue. The person analyzing this decision said it was Nikon that missed the boat as they didn't think professionals wanted auto focus. So when we look at MNF today and see all those Canons, it can be traced back to the decision to introduce the EF mount and the subsequent line of EF lenses. Canon locked them into the EOS / EF system and kept them there via continuous updates and improvements that made it cost prohibitive to start from scratch with Nikon. Which is one of the underlying issues unstated in the OP's question ...

That same analysis (I'll find it if I can) also pointed to the alphabet soup of Nikon lenses and bodies. The legacy Nikon lenses may mount to all bodies, but will they auto focus? I know it's not that complicated, but to the uninitiated without a decoder ring, it's a guessing game about which Nikon lens works with which Nikon body. There's none of that confusion in the EOS / EF system. Every EF lens, regardless of age, year released or whether it's been discontinued, that lens will work on every EOS body.

There's always going to be a new and better body. But, are you in a system with long-term viability? Of course in Nikon and Canon you are. For the other brands of interchangeable equipment, are those other companies big enough / dedicated enough to continue to fight it out over just a sliver of the overall market share?

(And thanks Baltimore, we needed that L up in Detroit ...)

Talk about learning curve, I went from an XTI to a 5dIII. I actually bought and read the Digital Filed Guide before I purchased the camera. I struggled with the functions vs. cost of 5d vs 7d at the time. All I can say is *&^% wow. I also bought some L-glass and I'm one happy camper, er photographer. If I could only teach the camera composition.... :)

You will probably not be disappointed assuming you do not have a large inventory of Canon lenses and have not compared the 7100 to the 70D.

Mercedes and BMW sell more vehicles than Ferrari ....
but that doesn't make them better

I see Ford every day on the street ... does it mean it is better than the others or it has mega production and enormous marketing.

After 32 years photography I have 3 Nikon DSLR, 1 Nikon 35mm 1 Canon DSLR, 1 Canon P&S ...
guess what - the Canon broke ... and I used it rarely
If I had all the lenses would I buy another body? - probably yes

I had problem the other day and found that this so common with Canon that I couldn't believe. I found post where a lady said that she had 4 Canon bodies in a row with the same broken mirror defect. Guess what - She had to buy Canon body because ot the horribly expensive lenses ....
